Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
so far, so good today.. I made a pact with myself to exercise (made it for a small gym workout today) a little bit each day.. something fun and not too hard/frustrating. and no "candy" sugar.. but I'm alright atm with honey, fruit, maple syrup.. My goal is not to eat too much of those as well.. but if I do, better than peanut mnm's and gummi bears! as usually happens when I stop drinking, the sugar is ok the first few days as a substitute but at some point I realise I'm eating to much.. for instance, instead of real food!
it's 430 pm and I feel much better in my gut than I did yesterday at this time..
so, onwards..Last edited by lifechange; July 27, 2017, 09:31 AM.

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
That's great LC. For metabolically healthy people, getting rid of added sugar, including in processed foods, is sometimes all that's needed. Fruit and other natural sugars are fine. I'm glad you're feeling better today :smile:Last edited by NoSugar; July 27, 2017, 10:43 AM.

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
So today is the 2nd day (almost) sugar free.. I had half a teaspoon in my latte when I was craving alcohol this afternoon.. But other than that, just a bit of watermelon this morning. Healthy food instead of candy definitely makes me feel better.. who would've thought?!

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
Good job, LC.
I don't know anyone who doesn't feel better eating a "real food" diet. Fortunately, that idea is making its way into the mainstream. For the sake of all our health care systems (not just the one here in the US which you've probably heard is in turmoil!), we've got to change what we eat and thereby cut down on the number of people with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, several neurological conditions, and other chronic "western" diseases that are the consequence of the junk we eat. Unfortunately, the western diseases are growing elsewhere as our diet is adopted worldwide.
Have a nice, nontoxic weekend

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
Yes, the health care situation in the U.S. is a disaster. But I was happy to hear that our Senator McCain decided to vote for the people for once. Don't know how much or for how long that might help. Nightmare. Everything you said is true.
For some stupid reason I decided to make "Saturday" (because I wanted to eat sweets yesterday!) a cheat day. Yeah, right. Anyway, it was a mistake and I felt like crap again.. so back on track. In the morning, at breakfast, I was eating some fruit, thinking it tasted sweeter than ever (after just a couple of days) and then we went for ice cream.. and because I was hungry, I went a bit crazy.. and then just like with alcohol, I was completely out of control!
I know how it works.. and then I do it anyway..

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
OK so today is Day 1 sugar-free
The goal is to keep my blood sugar stable - no insulin rush - no fat storage.
That means cutting out sugar, processed foods with sugar , bread and most white carbs. (all turn to sugar in the body, digest too quickly and leave you hungry again)
I will add good fats to my diet.
Week 1 I will concentrate on cutting out all obvious 'added sugar' . Chocolate, cakes , biscuits
Week 2 I'll look at the rest of the hidden stuff ....
Who's with me ......
NS you'll be there with your tips ?

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
Well done Satz. The more i research processed sugars the more deadly it seems. I've replace my morning coffee sugar with a plant food called stevia. No colouring, additives, processing. Just raw organic powder from the plant.

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
Way to go making changes to improve your health, satz123 and Guitarista! It is an adjustment, to be sure, but so was giving up the booze!!
I'm not sure if these have been linked before but for those of us that hate alcohol and what it does to us, these lay out the similarities between it and fructose:
Fructose: It’s “Alcohol Without the Buzz”
WHY Sugar is as Bad as Alcohol (Fructose, The Liver Toxin) - YouTube
I had to change my thinking about sugar (and for me, too many carbs in general) in the same way as I had to do for alcohol.
One way it is obvious to me that I've successfully brainwashed myself is that when I watch the British Bakers (my latest diversion from reality), I don't at all feel hungry when I see what they made. It is more like watching people make art. Frankly, I can't believe Paul and Mary or Pru bite into those lovely creations!!!
I'd love to help you make this change any way I can. xx, NS

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
Day 1 complete - it was reasonably easy to be honest. Not sure why? Maybe we just do not live in a house full of sweet things.
The stuff we do have I put it out of sight - it was quickly forgotten.
Day 2 begins with the recommendation of honey & lemon for my cough. :egad:
I have lovely organic thyme honey from Greece - should I take it ?

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
Glad day 1 was ok, satz123. Unfortunately, it is going to be hard to judge whether cutting out sugar is making you feel better while you have this awful cold. I’m afraid I’ve never found the natural remedies for coughs to work and I think I’ve tried them all, including honey, which is something I’ve never even liked. That said, a teaspoon of honey for a cough might be worth it, if it works for you and doesn’t send you into a cookie binge. The good thing about cutting the sugar from your diet is that while it is easier to have none, it isn’t the same kind of crisis as having a nip of alcohol. The main thing is to stop the overconsumption that sugar, especially in the form of processed food, can cause. I doubt that medicinal honey would result in a junkfood binge. I hope you start feeling better soon!

Re: The Sugar Free Challenge - Who is in??
Heading into day 4.
Severe headache yesterday
Little headache today.
Succumbed to the honey today for throat. Only because it's advised in a very old book I have for years of Natural Remedies for Common Complaints.
I've found everything to be useful down the years.
She also recommends a cold body pack - involving wrapping in a cold wet towel then quickly put on layers of warmed jumpers etc. & go to bed. The towel will be dry in the morning and you'll be better.
that sounds good - if I had the energy I'd do it
