I asked for help and got it ! First day sober for years!

    Hi everyone

I am new here and just wanted to tell you a bit about myself and hopefully to get to know you guys too.

I am 31, female, live in Birmingham UK and have been drinking heavily I would say since the age of 18. I have had bouts where I haven't had drinks etc.. but over the years its slowly crept up and I have lately admitted I am powerless over it. You know just saying that to another human being made me feel stronger ! Like I knew I could beat it by admitting it had hold of me !
Anyway so the other day I woke up, started drinking at 9am, still half drunk from night before. took a break from drinking between 4pm and 5pm. It was then I decided I have had it with this life, I am not happy, I am not in control, I act irrational and I dont trust if my thoughts are mine or just the booze talking.
So I made the decision and text both my parents asking for help. I said 'I want to quit drinking and can I come stay with you and spend new year with you as I dont want to drink and want to see the new year in sober and don't want to be alone'
My parents dont drink so I knew if I spent it with them, it would be tea at midnight and no booze in sight lol!
So I am sitting in spare room having done OVER 24 hours sober !!!! :nutso:

Thats just my little intro, hope to chat to you guys soon

    Sweet dreams xxx

That is Awesome! You will find tons of support here on your journey. And good for you for recognizing so early in your life and most importantly reaching out for help. It will help keep you accountable. And no matter what happens keep coming back here and reach out to people in your life for help. I know for alot of people relapse is reality and very devastating, if it happens dont ever give up. Also know that relapse does not have to happen either. After 10 years of daily drinking I quit March 17, 2011 and have not had any slips. Not saying my struggles are easier or harder than anyone elses, just wanted to let you know every journey is different.

Have a happy, sober and healthy New Year! Make everyday count and if you ever need help, support or just want to celebrate your accomplishments, we are all here for you!
AL free since March 17th 2011...loving this life. No drinking no matter what.

Lucky You, only very special occasions are commemorated by Nelz's Gold Star! What a way to start up here. Your stars must be aligned because you have also fallen upon the most amazing, supportive group of people in all stages of recovery from problematic drinking. I can vouch as I've been in need of help many times.

Welcome to MWO and try to read around the board for a while. In a few days, you'll feel even more lucky when you get to know the gang.

We all have one goal and hope to see you around soon. Great achievement in having found the solution to your first trials associated with fixing the drinking problem. Keep it up.

Thank you Threedog - yes well everyone else I know drinks or doesnt know how bad my problem is so my parents are the only people I know who wont have alcohol in the house. I know I can go the shop but then I would have to get dressed etc lol and right now, I am taking a few days in bed to rest and recover, gain my strength back, get through the withdrawal and know I am in the company of people who care about my well being. no matter how old we get, we all need our parents at times lol!

I am not so worried about tomorrow, Its when I am feeling good and I know the little devil is going to start saying 'go on you are fine now, one wont hurt' etc ... I am trying to mentally prepare for that right now - the sweats, itching and shakes make me not want to touch it again but I know when they go, the devil will try and drag me down !!

GOT TO BE STRONG !! Grrrrrr lol

Georgina, thank you so much and let me tell you, YOU CAN DO THIS! Believe me, I never thought I could stop after drinking so much everyday. I tried everything, AA, counseling, medications and Smart Recovery. This site and Smart Recovery finally did it for me. When I first stopped I didnt know if I could even make it to Easter. I took it one day at a time and kept telling myself "No drinking no matter what". Everyday made me stronger in my resolve. I slept so much better, I could deal with everyday stuff rationally, I love getting up everyday sober! My life is so much better today because I dont drink anymore. I am just getting over the flu and the whole time i was sick, I kept thinking thank God I dont drink because this is what i felt like all the time when i was drinking. It's truly amazing everything you become thankful for. My counselor told me it takes your brain two years to recover from heavy long term drinking and that i was a level 4 alcoholic (on a scale of 1 to 5). I was devastated by that but it made me stronger in my resolve to quit. I was not going to let myself die from this, i knew i was stronger than that. You are stronger than you realize and each day you are sober builds on that. I used to hate the word sober because i had no idea what that truly meant. Now I am 1000% proud to be sober and find no shame in telling people where I came from. Dont ever be afraid or ashamed of this, none of ever set out to be addicted to alcohol. You are amazing for reaching out and getting help.

How wonderful that you feel so close to your parents that you can ask them to help in this way!
Use this site to gain as much support and info so you know what to expect. Days 1-5 are the hardest. Use the time to read and set about changing your mind ....... Alcohol is a poison that is commonly ingested but is NOT normal, it is not food, it is not necessary, you will LIVE well without it and never regret stopping the madness.

Good luck, will see you around and :welcome: to MWO

Hey ONESTEP :welcome: It was simply quite touching to hear about your decision to quit. It takes guts and balls to do what you have done - especially at your age. I'm 33 and 4 weeks sober and one of the things I find the hardest is that we both are still at an age where many, if not most, of our peers drink.

YET - as I am constantly reminded of on this site by the wise and wonderful peeps here - to realise at the age we are at that we have a problem with AL and to take action to beat it not only takes balls but means we have many more years ahead of us where we are not chained to addiction, hangovers, feeling depressed and living only half a life.

And as for 1 day sober... :goodjob: that's NOT easy. You gotta a nelz star to prove it.
