One Step at a Time - January 2013

I was sitting here on the couch working on my laptop. All of sudden the ceiling light exploded. Scary!!!

Well - off to go thru a pile of old magazines. Seriously - I need an intervention. :H Or a guest spot on the show Hoarders.

Ouch! - Do you mean exploded with broken glass or just a loud noise? That sounds scary either way.

Good luck with the sorting. When I'm decluttering, I always ask myself "if I lost these in a fire, would I bother writing to the editor for a back copy?" If the answer's no, out it goes!

Glass - that is perfect! I can throw all of these magazines out!! :H

The bulb exploded with the glass flying everywhere. Plus there was smoke coming from the lamp part.

OMG - That sounds really dangerous! I'm so glad you weren't hurt.

I'm afraid there'd be rather slim pickin's if the Hoarders tried to get me on their show - I'm sometimes a bit too ruthless at uncluttering. I use two strategies: For anything not too important I use "if I lost it, how much effort would I go through to replace it?", and for the more important stuff (like personal papers) I use "if I carked it tomorrow, would I want my kids to have to sort through all this crap?".

It's lucky my place is so small or I'd probably have to change my name to "House Half Empty". :H

Nora, one night we heard this loud crash from my son's room. The glass top of his desk exploded. It was every where in the room including all over him in his bed. Fortunately it was safety glass but what a mess to clean up. Glad you're ok.

Nurdl that sounds terrible. What made it explode - was it heat from a desk lamp or something? Thank goodness he was ok. I imagine even safety glass could have caused a serious injury, especially if it had gone in his eyes.

What the heck is up with the exploding lights?

I am so tired of it being cold! I wear long underwear and a jacket in my own house. If I turn the thermostat up 2 notches my husband is complaining about it being hot. I swear this is getting worse as I'm getting older. I can't take the cold and I can't stand the heat in the summer.

Glass I've been hearing about the fires and your weather on the news. It's insane. I hope you are safe.

we went to see Silver Linings Playbook at our favorite old theatre last night. It was really good.

I had a 4 foot florescent bulb that was leaning up against aq counter explode as i walked by.... scared the bageebies out of me!!

Call me a sicko, but I love to declutter & organize! :H I have a little sign posted up in one of my closets that reads: If it's not Beautiful, Useful, or Loved, out it Goes!
Here's a link to an organizing site that expands on that idea:
If It's Not Useful Or Beautiful - It's Clutter

If you have closets jammed with lots of clothes, I've got a neat little tip that will help you identify which clothes you REALLY use, and which ones you don't. If you're interested, let me know & I'll post it.

Decluttering can feel like a daunting project, but the more you do, the easier it gets. And the feeling of freedom that you get from removing all that "stuff" in your life is truly amazing!

I once read that you wear 20% of your clothes 80% of the time and 80% of your clothes 20% of the time. So... we really can do with less!
Since I work from home, I bet my ratios are more like 92/8 and 8/92 --- I'm always in hoodies and jeans.

I would be interested in the post, FallenAngel - thanks!

I have enjoyed following all of you in this thread for the last couple of weeks and have been very encouraged. I've been bumping along on this AF road for several months and am determined to get it straightened out. I think reading/posting is very helpful. Thanks for all of the insight and support that you offer -- novices need it!

Hello to you NoSugar, and thanks for the kind words. :l If you keep going as you have been, your bumpy road is going to smooth out very soon.... and the joys of living AF will be opened up to you! It truly is a wonderful way to live NoSugar... I hope you give it everything you got to stay on this journey!

Can't remember where I got this little trick from, but it really does work slick for identifying what clothes you wear, and what ones you don't.
All you do is hang all your clothes with the hangers facing towards you. When you wear something, hang it back in the usual fashion, with the hanger loop facing away from you. At the end of the season, you will see what clothes were actually worn, and which ones weren't! Simple, but very effective!

Mama - I hadn't even heard of that movie. Glad that you had a good time.
