Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

    B,

I have had one too due to family history and it was no big deal, really. However, if you have red hair, you need more anathesia because you have less tolerance to pain. I read that in Prevention magazine years ago and I think it is true.

Good luck. It really is no big deal.

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

Starty:upset::chute: That is barbaric!!! No way would I have gone through with it with NO anesthesia...you poor thing. I did go through a proctoscopy, which is VERY similar, and it's even more painful and you bet, I bawled through the whole thing. I was only 22 years old at the time and the doc said, "come back in a year so we can do a follow-up procto" and I said, "NO WAY!!!!!!!"

Ok, Bruun...so I just saw where you wanted funny colonoscopy stories. Ok, here's mine. When I had my first colonoscopy 10 years ago, I was really a moderate drinker then but I was absolutely wringing with anxiety because I had been having horrible symptoms and was CONVINCED something was seriously wrong. So, I was about a size 6, and I had been nipping at the Kendall Jackson chardonnay and the Rumpleminze for a few hours the day before the exam. Well, because I couldn't eat anything, the wine and the liqueur went right to my head so I was probably legally drunk when I went in for my procedure. Well, before they wheeled me into the examination room, I said to the cute GI doctor who was going to be performing the procedure, "Does your mother know you do this for a living? I mean, come on...were there NO other jobs when you got out of med school that you decided to do THIS for a living?! Doesn't looking at butts all day get kinda old?" Then, when I woke up, he said that while I was under the anesthetic, I looked at him and said, "Can I kiss you?" He said he told me, "Not now, but maybe later." :H Ah, the medicinal benefit to Rumpleminze and Chardonnay!!!

Now, this time around....I am a disgusting 40 pounds heavier and my butt is about as big as a barn door, and dimply, too. Utterly gross. The new GI doctor was so cute and all I could think was, "oh shit!!! Why does he have to be good looking? " I was hoping he would be wrinkly old looking guy. Thank God he doesn't live in my town.

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

I Have had two colonoscopies. I woke up half way throught the first one, and they put me right back to sleep again.
The second one I slept right through. I drove home both times and had no ill effects afterwards.

HOWEVER do NOT eat anything. They changed the time on mine, so I thought I had enough time to have a light dinner the day before and that was a BIG mistake. DO NOT do that. trust me

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

Lucky 2.0-so my red hair is why I have no tolerance for pain? WOW! I didn't know that. I just thought it was because I'm such a chicken shit....the biggest coward I know.

Bruun, also, I forgot to tell you. The two days before the day of the prep, only eat SOFT foods.....soup, rice, pasta. NO meat, raw veggies, etc. It will make things much more comfortable for you once that liquid you have to drink kicks in.

The proctoscopy was sooooo painful. If you google it, you'll see pictures of the instrument. No wonder I screamed and cried through the whole thing. I felt like I was being sodomized by some big dude. NEVER AGAIN!!!

After I had my last colonoscopy, my mom, who had colon cancer surgery 5 years ago, asked me, "how did it go, dear?" And I told her, "well, mom, pretty well. They didn't find any gerbils or light bulbs so I guess I'm ok.":H She's 85 and she didn't get my joke. Oh well.

Starty-if I had been in your shoes and someone said to me, "oh, you'll be fine" I think I would have said. "Ok, why don't YOU have a colonoscopy without any pain meds, and then we'll talk!!"

BTW....Starty, I hear great things about you from Chillgirl. She's such a sweetie. I think your friends mirror you, don't you? If you're a great and funny person, then your friends will be, too.

Oh Rusty girl, you're on a ROLL!! ROFLMAO!!! I'm reddish and the gene test 23&me said I have extreme sensitivity to pain. Shut.

I am now pathetically poking at the Olin Kindle while I do heat therapy on my back so this will be short.

OPINION: UK IS CRUEL AND MER ILESS!!! Starty and Limers- feckem. No wonder everyone in the world immigrates here. They're as shit scared of evil ass docs as me!

Amused at how popular the asst thread is and I feel compelled to say shit one more time.

LOL Rusty your poor ole ma!

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

                      Yo, Bruun!!!

What does ROFLMAO mean? You are a wonderful person and I think the world of ya, but today, sweetie, you couldn't type your way out of a paper bag!:H I know you're in pain. CALL ME, DAMMIT. I gave you my cellphone number.

Oh yeah, my poor mom.:l When I was growing up, she used to make me wear white, cotton, brief underpants, the kind that come up to your breasts...and then I said, I'll be damned if I'm going to wear these granny pants. Sooooo....with a size 6 body, I started wearing thongs....and they really are comfortable if you get the kind with the really thin strap....not the thick one so it feels like you're flossing your crack. Anyway, when I had my first colonoscopy, I had worn my thong underneath my dress pants. So I'm in recovery from the firehouse insertion and my mom is trying to help me put my clothes back on...and she looks at my thong and holds it up and laughs and says, "WHAT IS THIS???!!!!" And I said, "it's a thong, mom. It doesn't leave unsightly panty lines." And she said...."I've never seen anything like this before." I told her that when I travel, I carry an extra pair in my wallet....because thongs are tiny. And she said, laughing..."oh, dear, what a great idea!!":H

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

                        Hi Bruunhilde ...

I'm glad you posted this...you're getting a lot of good input from folks...and omg...the comedy stylings of Rusty are priceless!

I'm piping in to share a little bit about my experience with a colonoscopy which actually set in motion my path to sobriety.

I went in for the procedure in my 40's because I was having abdominal pain. In the debrief after it was over, the doc told me I 'woke up' in the midst of it and they had to give me a whole lot more of whatever they were using to keep me under. It was then he introduced to me the concept of tolerance and he asked me if I had been honest about what I had written about my drinking habits. um. Well, of course I had lied on the pre-op sheet.

It was one of those moments when I clearly realized...no matter how much I concealed my drinking from others...my body was paying the price and there's no concealing that in the end. The doc's question would come back to haunt me for years.

And then...there were the polyps. I had a passle of those suckers and they were all on their way to being full blown cancer. ALL were successfully removed during the procedure and I was put on the 3 year plan. I am so grateful I got the 'silver snake'! I wouldn't be here writing this today if I hadn't.

Well...I would've like to have told you that on my next visit with Dr. roto-rooter that I had gotten sober and was leading a great AF life...but I wasn't. And, when it came time to head back in, I felt real shitty about that sitting in the front office filling in the final paperwork. I still lied about how much I drank although I did increase the amount listed compared to the first time. AND then I reminded the doc before going under...that I had a high tolerance and would probably need more than my body weight would suggest. Well...inspite of the increase in the juice...I was actually awake and aware during the procedure, but felt no pain. I actually remember talking to the doc and watching the snake on the screen he was using. Oh well. He sure was right about tolerance. At that point, I was drinking more than ever. Oh - and I had a regrowth of those damn polyps.

Fast forward to my last procedure. It came about 8 months into my final quit. I just felt such a sense of deep satisfaction to fill out that form honestly. "How many alcoholic beverages do you...." I wanted to plaster it on the form in big, black sharpie: ZERO - NONE - NADA - ZIP!!!!

It just got better from there. The juice they gave put me under and kept me under. AND when I awoke, I was greeted with good news. The polyp growth had slowed down dramatically. So much so that I am now on the 5 year plan. Whoo Hoo....to not having a camera up my butt as much! And to being honest! And to being free of polyps and free of addiction!

Change, for me sure began in an unexpected way...

Good luck....and please let us know how you do....
                        Sober for the Revolution!

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

                          Hi Bruun,

Please remain calm. I've had 5 now and I look forward to the next one like a kid a christmas. Last 2 they gave me a DVD of outtakes and bloopers that I shared with friends and family later (I'm happy to mail you a copy if you like - or maybe Youtube would be easier).

I found this instructional article very helpful:-

Dave Barry: A journey into my colon -- and yours - Dave Barry - MiamiHerald.com

Seriously, your first one may seem daunting but it's so worth it. I have a family history of bowel cancer and so have been having them every 2 years since age 45 or so. Getting the all-clear afterwards is a golden moment.

Not sure how it's done in your country but in OZ they use a short-acting knockout drug with a reversing agent given when you're done. Amazing! I was drinking heavily for the first 4 of mine and didn't have any problems with waking during the procedure. The only other advice I can give as a veteran of this procedure is that you will experience some in crease in frequency and "looseness" :H in bowel movements in the 24 hours or so leading up and the word is "pat" rather than "wipe" and have plenty of vaseline handy.

                          Good luck with yours

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

I have had one here in Oz and after being injected, I felt them taking the cover off my butt and must have looked a bit panicked as I was wide awake, then the anaesthetist suddenly appeared and injected what I think was propofol (white stuff) and I was asleep the whole time (having quite a tolerance to alcohol too). I was scared as I had tried to have a gastroscopy years ago in the UK and they gave me IV valium but I was so scared of having this thing down my throat that I became ?ncompliant'as I saw the scope with its bright light coming towards my mouth. I don't remember what I did but I was sent home in disgrace without having the procedure. I have a friend in the UK who had a gastroscopy a few years ago and he said it was the worst experience of his life as they gave him nothing. How awful. Here in Oz it is usual to have Midazolam, which is the ''twilight'' sedation and you don't remember anything, even if you are partially awake.

Colonoscopy???!! Will my AL tolerance make me stay awake during it?

Oh Turn, thanks so much, that's very helpful and CONGRATS! I hope to be writing a post similar to yours one day not too distant from today.
Croc, funny about the CD, my dad tried to show me his colon too, which to this day, frankly gives me the shudders. Or maybe it's just the phrasing I stupidly used "when my dad tried to show me his" which isn't funny at all and ugh. On the other hand, you have to laugh to get through this life, eh?
Shame, cannot imagine going through the gastroscopy with my gag reflex I'd have been non-compliant. Wonder if any of those docs had ever given oral sex to a big man? I assume gastroscope is metal and plastic (not soft) and goes way the hell down there past the ole gagger. Then you'd have a puke reflex not just a gag, I imagine I'd just double over. Sometimes the treatment is much worse than the disease. The things they do to 'prolong life' for fatal diseases include surgeries (they did two surgeries in the last four months of my pancreatic cancer friend's life, a fatal disease that she was on the last leg of). Waste of what's left of life, these 'treatments'.... No wonder healthcare cost is impossible to contain.

Oh and Croc, thanks for the hint. About patting. I get it.

This whole conversation is making me a bit faint.

                              :moon:

                                I'm Confused About The Tolerance Factor-Please Clarify-Thanks!

Turnagain, I am so happy about your positive outcome (no pun intended:H ) on your last colonoscopy. Wonderful news!!!! But I am confused by both your comments and Bruun's...why would a high tolerance for alcohol have anything to do with a colonoscopy and the amount of drugs you need to keep you asleep during the procedure?

Turn, are you saying that in the first colonoscopy you had....that the doc found holes/tears in your colon due to your AL use?

Bruun, is that what you are worried about?

Also, Bruun....regarding um, wiping, vs. patting....my doctor gave me an EXCELLENT tip which I used. Use Neosporin (for pain relief) on your butt before you even take the gallon or so liquid prep. I had no discomfort at all....no burning...etc. because I followed her advice. Sorry if it's TMI.
