    OFF TOPIC-JUICING

    Kradle-
My daughter had the smoothie with the tomato in it this morning and she said the aftertaste was like "barf"...so I'm thinking that's not good. LOL She ended up drinking it anyway which suprised me. Now I'm dreading having mine later (I made them last night). Oh well, barf or not I'm gonna force it down, but I won't do that combo again if it's yucky. LOL

I have read where it is best to drink the juice immediately so that the fruits & veggies don't oxidize, especially if the juicer/blender uses high speeds.
      Is this true?

Yes, that is what I've read and always believed FA. It does make sense. I make it and drink it immediately.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to get mangoes! LOL!!!

          Nutribullet

I'm with you K9! It is the bomb. I love it! I was always pouting that I did not have the $$$ for the Breville or Vitamix like everyone at work has. This thing is perfect for me!

In the morning I am using fruit, greek yogurt, protein powder, a bit of lite vanilla soy milk. DELICIOUS.

For the green it's greens fruit and either raw almonds, goji berries , flax seed.

And you are right K9-the clean up is nothing! So psyched about this!

Lizker-I have seen the Odwalla things; might just try that soon too.

            Fallen-
Now I'm going to have to look that up. I know several people at work that bring theirs in and drink later in the day...hmmm. I figure either way it's better than nothing (?). I'm hoping anyway.

            Here's what I found:

            9. Does the NutriBullet generate heat that kills the enzymes in fruits and vegetables?
Unlike larger heavy-duty blenders that heat up when running for an extended period of time, the NutriBullet emulsifies foods in just seconds. The system never heats up to 118 degrees Farenheit, the point at which enzymes are denatured. Heat, light,, and air are the main elements that kill enzymes. The NutriBullet does not heat up the ingredients and when consumed just after blasting, the fruits and vegetables retain the most nutrients possible. If storing, keep in a dark, airtight container filled as much as possible to minimize exposure to air.

            12. Can I freeze a NutriBlast and, if so, for how long will it keep and still retain its nutrients and enzymes?
You can freeze a NutriBlast and thaw it the night before. Enzymes hold up pretty well in the cold freezer (just not in the heat), so freezing is an option. Depending on the ingredients in your NutriBlast, it may keep in the freezer for a few weeks if sealed in an airtight container. When freezing your NutriBlast, do not store it in the NutriBullet cup. Your NutriBlast should be transferred from the cup to an to appropriate freezer-safe container prior to freezing.

I've been surfing around a bit looking for some information and ran across this video,

              http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=fvwp&v=wsWKcXf4dlE[/video]]Savory Green Smoothie - YouTube

Some of you noted not liking tomatoes in your green smoothie, well this guy shows you a recipe. It's a veggie idea and the avocado takes care of the watery base.

As far as nutrient loss, it isn't only heat, it concerns oxidation. From the moment of harvest nutrients begin to fade. Even cutting up fruits and letting them sit exposed to oxygen can cause more nutrient loss. When I have more time, I'll do more surfing. Have to go do some things.

                Quick tip
Frozen fruit and veggies are just as good as fresh produce.
Frozen mangoes and other seasonal fruits are available all year round. You also get more
                value for your buck.

Another convert to the juicing/smoothies (though I wax and wane with enthusiasm, so thanks for reminding me to get back into it!):H

Glass1/2 - I did the Jason Vale 14 days - lost about 3kgs in the first few days. It was good, but I didn't feel overly energetic (but then I'm having issues with that anyway) and like Molly, I love to chew something. But his recipes are good (though a bit too much fruit for me). I think he had the beautiful vegetable soup recipe.

I've got the Breville which is great but am finding there is still a bit of "juice" left in the produce; it is a few years old though. Also the Vitamix which I love (Kradle, it's about $1000 here in Oz!!).

I find I have to follow recipes exactly as if I try and improvise it ends up tasting vile and gets dumped!

We use the ninja and it is much cheaper than all these newfangled things, lol. Easy to clean, makes great smoothies. Before we used that, we just used a regular food processor.

I like to add some nuts, raisins, dried cranberries, to give a lil something to chew on. Papaya is also a great addition too and adds great texture. Lots of people add bananas but alas, I am allergic.

                      JUICERS

You know what? We apparently have a lot of "juicers" here.

And we are now the good kind of juicers. LOL

                        OFF TOPIC-JUICING

                        I got my NutriiBullet today!
I made a couple of smoothies tonight & I'm impressed!

My kitchen has looked like a Consumer's Test lab the last few days...
Omega juicer, MagicBullet, traditional blender, and a VitaMix all lined up on the counter! :H

The juicer I have is a centrifugal type that ejects the pulp... it's great for making juices. But it's not for extracting nutrients from greens.

The VitaMix certainly makes short order of liquifying everything, but I find for me, making only a single serving at a time, it's just too big. Plus, it's fairly large & heavy... that's also a consideration for storing & space.

The traditional blender did quite a good job, which surprised me. I think it depends on what ingredients you want to liquify, but in general... it's an okay tool, if that's what you got & don't want to purchase anything else. I have no idea how long the motors would last, I guess that would greatly depend on the size & quality. I have purchased good blenders at the thrift store for my papermaking, and they've held up well.

I used my MagicBullet single shot (a smaller version) this past week or so since I started juicing again. It made a smoothie... but it definitely wasn't "smooth". :H

Maybe this is premature, since I've only used the NutriBullet twice; but so far, out of the appliances I have, this is my #1 Choice. It does a great job of making a smoothie smooth, easy to clean, and compact & easy to store. I'll keep you guys updated on any new developments.

                          OFF TOPIC-JUICING

                          Hi Ann/y'all,

Here are some juice recipes from a Jason Vale mailing list i've just realised i'm on. I'm not intentionally plugging him or any book/s mentioned here, but thought the recipes could be of interest.

                          RECIPES OF THE WEEK
                          Fruity Superfood Sensation
Plump blueberries and ripe banana combined with the divine flavours of freshly extracted pomegranate and orange juice create today's FRUITY SUPERFOOD SENSATION Smoothie! This superfood smoothie contains a huge abundance of vitamins, anti-oxidants and vitamin C. Sure to protect you against infections and more serious conditions too, and tastes amazing! Taken from the Juice Yourself Slim book.
Recipe: 2 oranges, 1/6 lemon, 1 handful of blueberries, 1/2 banana, 1 small handful of goji berries (optional if you can't find them!) and 1 pomegranate. Juice the oranges, lemon and pour into a blender. Add the blueberries, banana, gojo berries and pomegranate and blend till smooth. With the pomegranate you ideally need to use a citrus juicer as it's hard to juice otherwise. If a problem, just omit it.

                          Lolly In A Glass
Tuesday's recipe was a LOLLY IN A GLASS but with no artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives. Did you know - there are over 200 species and four different colours of raspberries? Although red and black are the most common, they can also be purple or even yellow!
Recipe: 1/3 peeled lime, 400g fresh raspberries, 1/3 peeled pineapple and some ice. Juice the lot, remembering to pack the raspberries in amongst the lime and pineapple and pour over ice.

                          Savoury Superfood Sensation
To contrast Wednesday's Superfood Berry smoothie, today's is a devine SAVOURY SUPERFOOD SENSATION Smoothie! Genuine superfoods are so super that it is alleged you could survive on them solely and get all your nutritional requirements, but hey, I believe variety is important! Also, sprouts are one of the few vegetables that gain vitamins after they have been harvested because they continue to grow, so they are super good for you! Find this recipe in the Juice Yourself Slim book.
Recipe: 1/4 ripe avocado, handful of spinach, handful of sprouts (alfalfa or mung beans or anything similar) 1/4 pineapple and 1/6 lemon. Juice the broccoli, spinach, sprouts, lemon and pineapple and add to a blender with the avocado. Blend till smooth.

                          Winter Warmer
Why not give this Juicy salad a go! Called the WINTER WARMER it is not only nutritious but also will set your taste buds alight. It's yummy but also the squash is an excellent source of vitamin A and C (as are the tomatoes and peppers) but squash also has potassium, fibre and maganese. A truly delicious and nutritious salad! Taken from the Juice Yourself Slim book, a 7 day juice, smoothie, soup and salad programme.
Recipe: 2 tblsp vegetable oil, 1/4 butternut squash (peeled), 1/2 red pepper, 1/2 yellow pepper, 1 small red onion (peeled), 1/2 courgette and 1 bag of mixed salad leaves. With oven to 180oC / gas mark 4, drizzle oil on a baking tray and warm up in oven for 10 minutes. Roughly chop squash, peppers onion and courgette into small chunks. Place on baking tray and bake for 25 minutes. Remove, add tomatoes, season with black pepper and return for further 5 minutes to oven. When done, remove and 'throw' over prepared salad. Delicious!

                          Sweet Veggie Heaven
Zesty lemon and sharp ginger combined with the natural sweetness of apple juice and balanced by the cool savoury tastes of fresh water-rich vegetables makes this super yummy SWEET VEGGIE HEAVEN.
This juice contains a huge mix of vitamins including vitamins A, C and E, it also contains a host of minerals. The cucumber and celery are natural diuretics and great for reducing fluid retention. These veg are also great for helping your body maintain a natural Ph balance, which often becomes acidic due to poor diet. Find this and more in Juice Yourself Slim.
Recipe: Juice 3 apples, 1 stick of celery, 1/4 courgette, 1/4 cucumber, 1/4 yellow pepper, 1/4 lemon and 1cm of ginger and pour over ice.

                          Winter Warmer
Not eaten yet or still peckish? Why not try this simple classic! The Mozzarella, Beef Tomato and Basil Salad from the Juice Yourself Slim book.
Recipe: You need 2 beef tomatoes, small handful of fresh basil, 150g fresh buffalo mozzarella, a dash of extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and black pepper. Wash and layer the salad as displayed, and drizzle with balsamic vinegar, oil and pepper, and hey presto, a delicious Italian-inspired snack guaranteed to wet your taste buds.
