    Afrikaans Swearing Lesson #1

    BLIKSEM

I'll try and do the phonetic spelling later... no good at that.

    Literal translation: thunderbolt

Metaphorically: one of the most versatile swearworrds in Afrikaans. Most often used as an equivalent to "you bastard". Typically also uttered as an expression of pain. From my own bitter experience, I said "bliksem" the last time I clumsily tried to hammer a nail into a wall and hit my thumb instead. Or when I realised, just too late, that I had been caught by a traffic camera.

Stay tuned to an Army Thread near you for the next word

He's now had lunch and has started talking bout dinner. WTF??? Does he think he's at the Barcelo's buffet??
Deffo don't think I'll be goin to Aftercare tonight - roads to Navan will be shite I'm guessing - so someone had better be round here for a chat - can only watch so many sub-titled French porn movies - well - according to himself - 'it's CERTAINLY not porn - it's a mood movie' --- yeah - we all know what fucking mood:H
Bliksem also happens to mean "to fuck you up" or physically assault. Perfect context :H:H:H

I was told to start taking exercise. Even walking 3 times a week would help, apparently.

Genes are also bliksems. Mum has it too, and our fingers are eerily alike.

But yeah... AL exacerbates most conditions: diabetes, heart disease, immune diseases, you name it.

And Tip, I thank you for the culture and language lesson!
Bliksom certainly captures the electronic failure we are experiencing at the office today, and the snowstorm outside!

            Bliksem:new:

Drinking alcohol causes so much disease

I have Osteoporosis which has a strong link with heavy drinking and Hypertension also caused by booze. Both conditions now under control because of my sobriety and loads of exercise.

But the links to Arthritis,Breast cancer, liver disease, heart disease etc. etc.are proven.

However, even though I knew all that I always reckoned I would be OK:upset:

The gardener is long gone, but the eldest cub asked if he could invite two mates over for a swim. I could bliksem the 3 of them. They're fecking loud.

Hoping to get to Lindisfarne with daughter number one plus the children tomorrow.
I wrote that before I thought it might amuse you.

Still snowing and it is so comfy on the couch. No pearls of wisdom here.

BUT did you enjoy Bringing up the bodies?
