Anyways, i always liked to imagine i was like a bit like him - arty, jewlery wearing, smoking and drinking and swearing... Funny how we are drawn so much to an "image" we want to create for ourselves instead of just being ourselves...

Me cousin stopped the smoking and has cut much back on his drinking. Had to get a stint in his heart when he was 65 (he 's 70 now) due to a life of rich livin!
But sometimes I think : controversial this : but ....... is it better to have a 'different' life with a bit of badness like your cousin ? - prolly most die young - but is it better than to be just 'gray' and melt into the background ?
Oh I dunno ! Just think sometimes :new:

I certainly dont think he has many regrets - even if getting the stint made him a bit more health conscious (at 65! :H)

To be honest, I agree Satz. My dad dont smoke and drinks VERY moderately, but he LOVES his food... and whenever me ma is away, out comes the fried spuds, corned beef and bacon :H:H As a good friend of his said (who is about 90) better to be happy and a bit fat than miserable and skinny!

Satz, just to add my teeny wee tuppence to your earlier post - really agree with what others are saying - I also think there is something about fear. Their fear (not yours) because you wont join them in going to this other place, this drunken place. I think people can feel uneasy if others wont join them in sharing a drug. Also, specifically with AL, there's is something 'other' about those who abstain, who are AF. As if it;s odd. We are often predisposed to be wary of things that are not normal to us. If we let our emotional faculties take over our intellectual faculties then this wariness of things that are not within our circle of 'normal' can turn into something very ignorant and none too nice.

And, as others have pointed out, your abstinence may be highlighting something in their own drinking they dont want to admit. I reckon this is the case for a couple of folks at my work... who then turn to other drinkers to cosy in close to, as being close to them muffles the thoughts that if what I am doing in being AF is much healthier, then their regular 3,4,5,6,... pints per night can't exactly be 'healthy'...
            Thanks Arsey :l
Then sometimes I'm thinking it's me.
I do not think I am committed to being a non-drinker FOREVER.
I love being sober. Have been since January 13th this year. But just 'cos it suits me at present.
But I think sometimes - and I know this is frowned on on the boards - "I will drink just a glass of wine at dinner sometime in the future" :egad:
            Shoot me again !:new:

Sorry to jump in, don't think anyone should shoot you Satz:no: You're being honest. If ye cant be honest here then what's the point of the place?

If I thought I could have a glass of wine with dinner and leave it at that and it not lead to the bottle or more I would jump at it. Alas, I cant do that, so hafta aim to be AF forever. But it's much easier for me to not think in terms of forever and just today if ya know what I mean?

As Peapants says - no bugger should shoot you. you are being honest and that is what this site is for (though perhaps if you started speaking about how you like giving head (to the POPE! :H:wow::H) that might be frowned upon).

As i've spoken openly to some here, there might well be a day where I too have a beer. I'm not saying never. Like you, being AF suits me right now (though i'm more fortunate as I don't have to live with drinkers as you do, Doc), indeed I still think I need to do work on meself more before I do consider ever attempting a drink. It's YOUR journey. And the fact as I see it is is that you have found an ability and enjoyment with being AF and that is A VERY GOOD THING... and EXACTLY WHAT THIS SITE SUPPORTS... even if you are able to enjoy a glass of vino at some other point. Just me tuppence worth.

My SIL promised herself at 35 that she would go back on the cigs at 60.
Her way of coping with the loss when she quit her beloved fags.
Thought she would be half-dead anyhoo :H
Not loolking that way - but it got her through.
Mybe I'll promise myself that glass of red wine at 70 ???:H

watching the david bowie programme - see the difference from mid 70's to late 70's, when he stopped taking drugs - MASSIVE. He looks alive. AND he says he doesn't need drugs to write prodigious and incredible work.

                            damn right.
