    Moderation advice

    Not alcohol....but food.

It's easy with wine, I just don't. But I have to eat. I simply cannot do it in moderation. I'm either crazy dieting or mental bingeing. My weight fluctuates like a yoyo. Dieting is a challenge. Eating is a comfort. Why can I not sit somewhere nicely in the middle?

Any advice or forums I can read on would be appreciated. I'm not anorexic or bullemic. I don't purge or anything like that. I just can't seem to moderate my food intake, I've recognised after years of trying that its the eating in moderation issue that's causing the problem.

    Any advice appreciated

    Thanks in advance.
I have a drink problem, I have been AF since 15 March 2011 and I am working hard to stay that way

Hi Pingu! I'm not an expert by any means but I've found that I was always rushing to get somewhere and scoffing my food on the run. I've started - don't laugh - mindful eating. As in, when I do eat, that's all I'm doing. Not juggling a laptop, book, watching tv or anything else distracting. Just the food. I know its hard when your a busy mum but just taking time out to pay attention to my food and register what I'm doing is working for me.

    Just a thought

Hey Pingu!! No diet or advice is right for everyone. If you like to eat, then you will not do well depriving yourself. I suggest that you just try making healthier choices 80-90 % of the time and allowing yourself a 'cheat' day. Just the fact that you are not telling yourself 'No, I can't ever have that' can help the mental attitude.

I usually try to follow the advice that 50% of the food on my plate should be veggies, 25% lean meat and 25% 'good' carbs.

Lately I have been reading lots of advice that you shouldn't eat protein and carbs in the same meal, so I'm trying that. One meal - protein and veg, another meal - protein and carbs. It's actually natural for me as breakfast is eggs and toast or fruit and cereal and lunch is salad with chicken or tuna and veggies. Then dinner can be meat/veggies or a more vegan meal with quinoa and veggies.

As Haps says, just be mindful of what you're eating. Plan it in advance, including snacks, and have a cheat day (or two!) where you can make sure you're not feeling deprived.
Well it's all right now. I've learned my lesson well. You see you can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself.

        Hi guys thanks
I think its the amount of crap I eat between meals.that screws me up. My.meals are quite.healthy. But once I start snacking I literally carry on until I feel I never want to eat again. One bar of chocolate is never enough.
I put on a stone in the last two months. And now I'm hell bent on losing it.

I guess planning treats is the way forward. I just can't stop once the first goes down....

You may not be eating ENOUGH! It was so wierd when I realised that I was overweight and starving.
Now I eat HUGE amounts of vegetables, salad and fruit ( and I mean HUGE !!!!) and I no longer want the snacks.

I really notice if I neglect this I am straight back to the junk.

The theory is your appetite is only suppressed when you have given your body enough vitamins and minerals, until you have your brain makes you go on eating trying to find what it needs......hence the people who can consume six burgers and fries a day......they are never full because they are starved of nutrients.

The revelation that it isn't about calories was a revelation, and a relief to me. Since Xmas I have dropped 14 kg with no 'dieting', I still eat junk but I eat tons of good food first.

            Good luck, hope it helps.

I was on the paleo diet for a while and found it too restricting. What I did read, and probably the best information I have ever read in the book I read "It Starts With Food" was this. The reason we can eat a whole bag of sweets, chips, etc. is that your body craves nutrients and your body will let you eat until you get the vitamins/nutrients it needs. Crap has no nutrients, so we just keep eating. I have never eaten a bowl of fruit until I was feeling ill....but I certainly have eaten way too many potato chips and felt like shite! What gave me the boost I needed to get healthy was: no wine (duh, right?), no processed foods of any kind: no refined sugar, no grains and no dairy. I lost 20 pounds and have kept it off, but I have incorporated dairy back in, and every so often a small amount of whole and natural grains. I found the grains make me feel bloated though. It is hard, but I thought, hell i I can stop drinking which was a terrible habit, I can do this. Even making small changes will help. Up your water intake - even that will help. Sorry for rambling.

Also, eating fat creates satiety, so all this non-fat nonsense is really contributing to our weight gains. Don't be afraid of fat, just make sure to get good fat instead of garbage. I don't know all the ins and outs, but good choices include olive oil, coconut oil, nuts, and avocado. Egg yolks aren't the criminals we were told they are, either, so don't completely cut them out.

Eating right for me takes a lot of planning but it's worth the work. Each night I pack my food for the next day. 5-6 small meals that I eat every 2 hours or so. And when I say meal, it's more like a snack. Chicken breast and string cheese. Cottage cheese and tomatoes, etc. If you eat continually you will never get so hungry that you binge. Plus it will even out your metabolism and not send your body into "starvation mode" where it stores fat. If your body knows that more food is coming, it will release it's hold on the fat cells.

I have to have an all or nothing policy with junk food (like alcohol), because if I have one piece of candy or some chips...it's over! I will binge and feel sick, so it's easier not to start!
:heart:I love my daughter more than alcohol:heart:

Better eating people I enjoy on Facebook include 180 Degree Health, Go Kaleo and Sean Flanigan. They are all against restrictive eating, and/or elimination of any major nutriment groups (fats or carbs). Too many people have really screwed up their metabolism by starving themselves. There is a better way.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.
