So this morning I decide I am going to "come out" on Facebook and announce I have quit drinking. I am noticing three things (in the first five minutes!)

    1. People say oh I only drink so and so as if I am attacking their drinking habits.
    2. People say thanks, you have inspired me to look at my drinking habits.
    3. Everyone is incredibly supportive!

You just never know whose life you are changing when you change your own!

Gosh June - you are brave announcing that on FB!! I would be much to much of a coward to do that.

I always say to my children, before you post anything on Facebook always ask yourself if you would be happy walking into a pub and shouting out what you're about to post. I can imagine you walking into a pub right now shouting out 'I don't drink!!' :H
Never put off to tomorrow what you can achieve today!

That is great that you have found the courage to do this. I believe in not being embarrassed about my NOT drinking. We have done so many embarrassing things while drunk yet so many are ashamed to let people know they have stopped. Makes no sense to me. Too many people have no shame in posting on FB about the crap they do/did while drinking, yet we feel timid about sharing we don't put poison down our throats anymore. My opinion is I have worked everyday to live this sober life and I am proud of it.

I think you should be proud to share your new lifestyle and yes you will show others by setting an example that it can be done.

I've found that the important people in my life who never drank alcohol don't react too much because they never saw much reason to do it in the first place. They probably think I finally realized how nasty it is and came to my senses. (They did not know I had a problem). The people who drink socially but are not addicted don't care what other people drink or do not drink and have expressed little interest. The pressure has come from people who are insecure about their dependence on alcohol and are threatened by the whole topic (I recognize the reaction --- it used to be mine!).

Be careful. Employers check FB to determine character. So do property managers if you ever need to rent. Possibly even health care providers but being in Canada with socialized medicine, that may not be an issue.

Funny you should say that. My boss found my posts on this website and when he showed me I told him about this site and why I post. He was not mad or upset at all. I am proud of who I have become and not ashamed at all. I truly believe if someone has a problem with it, it is because they have a problem themselves.

Red - totally curious. How would your boss find your posts on MWO unless he was a member too and recognized you? I feel pretty anonymous here, so your post sort of alarmed me.

3J - impressive and brave. Glad you are getting support. I am just friends with way too many people from work to do it myself. Yes - many of them would judge me...harshly, I'm afraid.

Don't worry it was my fault. I am totally open about my sobriety and I don't hide anything. This site is totally anonymous if you protect your identity. Luckily I am surrounded by good people and have an awesome job and coworkers. I realize others may not be so fortunate.

I'm about an hour southwest. Closer to Lake Geneva. And yeppers - we are actually going to make it into the 90s this weekend. I love it.

Red I am not too worried about what others think. That's the joy of getting old(er). Moss I have 28 years on at my job and not too concerned but thanks! I found the more I say it out loud the more accountable I feel the more I know I'm done with AL!
