Sorry this is prolly getting boring but my question was genuine ... have we now evolved to the point where we need to get our kids comfy with screens and swipes and 'puter shit from the age of fusking two? Before we've even gone to kindy? Fusking spare me ...
I can imagine putting a kids game onto mummy or daddy's ipad and letting them play occasionally but having their own seems ridiculous.

That's exactly where it's heading with some parents, yes.

And by their 19th birthday they'll all be Psychopathy Test high scorers with chronic Vitamin B12 deficiency and the musculo-skeletal system of a 90 year old.
If your 8 year old self met you, would they be proud?

Bridge if you ever need cooking ideas you could give us some ingredients from the Bridge Fridge and we can play Ready, Steady, Cook. I'm much better at thinking of things than actually cooking them.

our kids use their mums one, under supervision.
the money is one thing, and the kids are growing up in a computer age.
I think it would be like giving a 2 year old a tool they will need to use as a young adult and justifying it by saying they can use .001% of the tools potential "power".
No i don't think it is really for the kid, it is a baby sitter of sorts, like the TV in the bedroom of my generation. Which is another thing i will not do.

                              TF,

I hope you don't mind if I weigh in on the iPad for children question.

My daughter has three of her "own" and two by marriage, (which is hilarious considering she wanted one and only one.)

The oldest was given an iPad two years ago when he was 10. My daughter thought that was outrageous and ridiculous. So much money on an item that can be dropped, left somewhere, etc.

Don't get me wrong, all of her children have access to an XBox and all love to play varying games on it. They also love television and can find their shows by navigating to Hulu or Netflix.

When she feels they have had enough time, she simply unplugs them. She does that frequently because she feels that they become way too introverted just playing games. She shoves them outdoors and makes them play in the yard, etc.

Much to her chagrin, the schools are now giving the kids iPads for their books. That way all the books are stored on the iPads and it is easier for the children to transport back and forth to school. She hates this concept. An iPad in the hands of children for school and the parents are liable for replacement if they lose them.

She is also upset that cursive writing is no longer taught to children. Spelling words are no longer taught, since the media used can use spell checker. Unfortunately, spell checker doesn't pick up the finer points of communication, such as losing weight versus loosing weight, a common error I see these days.

I recognize that education needs to keep pace with technology but I am not sure that getting rid of spelling is a good step. I can see that learning cursive can be dropped for other areas, but spelling? Next, the multiplication and division classes will be dropped since calculators that reside on phones and iPads, etc, will handle that for them.

My worry is that without the devices, these young people will grow up without even knowing if something is correct or not because they don't have a yardstick to measure against.

Oh well. Just a vent here. I worry about education today and how it is evolving to deal with the latest technology.

Tawny, in short, yes 2 is too young to have your own iPad.
Jones I am duly upset for you on the issue of your friends not coming to visit....I think this sort of thing would actually keep me in the destructive cycle of drinking....like I was the live wire, party girl , fun to have around person....people expected it of me & I delivered even if I wasn't into it. Bye bye to that. But it does hurt sister :l Cindi said it best.
Mr Cakes & I have just spent 2 nights in the Hunter Valley....eat/sleep/buzz/eat/sleep/buzz...the food was delicious, but not as good as Tawnys lunchboxes.
