My mate who died earlier this year had a humanist funeral. What made his so great was his maw speaking, his bro speaking and the life music being played. It was a good service. I once wrote a poem about the funeral i wanted and sent it to my folks. My dad still keeps it. It wasn't a humanist one - not that i'd necessarily want a conventional religious one - but it was one where i wanted every walk of life to be there and there to be no dogmas or prescriptions of faith or people saying "and now pray at this point" or whatever. Pressies are weird. Well, what i mean is we all love getting them, but for the last 4 or 5 years my folks haven't given me a birthday simply because each year i can't think of something and time goes by and the next year is upon us. At xmas... my bro and i get summat fairly straight forward - a new jumper or some such thing. And that is fine. Less is more. Presents are about meaning, not about the object given. I really wish more people would get that.

Having said that... it's not like i'm frugal. Bank just text me to say "WARNING WARNING - NO MONEY LEFT!!!".... Need to stop wasting money on buying juice and crisps during the day... or running gear :H

OK... here it is... written about 4 years ago... uhmm... can i just say (and this is not being apologist) that i do mention priests and cathedrals... but they can just be celebrants... and cathedrals any building that makes you go "cooooo" or stuns you into awe. it's not meant to be a "religious" poem in that sense. Just celebratory.

when i die let there be a funeral
in some grand cathedral
with choral sounds resounding off stone walls

and let there be people there
kids and clowns, drunks and delinquents,
priests and old wise women

and let them speak and laugh and cry
oral expression entwining with choral song
to fill the capacious cathedral

and let there be dogs and cats
bikers and skateboarders,
pipe smokers and whisky imbibers

noises and voices i shared when i wasn't cooped in a coffin

let eulogies be spoke and
music played to raise the sense of wonder that is
to be and not to be

and people will be given paints and brushes
to draw upon the walls
words, pictures, symbols.

let this be a mess - a work of art in progress
a day and night to express
the passing of one life

before being drawn together
as one body. silence falls.
breath. the body breaths.

and the priest in full vestment
will proclaim the god damn mystery
that is life and death

and lead in song and prayer
and an open acknowledgement that the only person in this cathedral that knows more than anyone else about the god damn mystery that is life and death -
is me.
