OK - I'll have to hop in here. I certainly had nothing subversive in mind when I started this thread. I LOVED the responses because, as I said, I'm interested in geography. I love reading about other countries' flora and fauna and houses and yards. I've spent hours Googling some of the places mentioned and indulged in some wonderful armchair travels. It also surprised me to read of how many of us are aware of the natural beauty which surrounds us.
I was in no way trying to find out anyone's hat size or credit card details, but now that I have a clear picture in my head of Simey's house based on her delicious colour scheme, I'm sure I can track her down!
I apologise to anyone who has found this thread invasive. It was never my intention.

No problem feeling invaded here Tawny. I love this thread and was describing your kangaroos in your yard to hubby. We get so much rain, wish I could send you some. I agree so many of us have described nature when describing our homes. Interesting.Enlightened by MWO

Couldn't agree more Fan.
This place is so friendly that I feel, at times, I have been a bit too unguarded about my personal life.
I've had PMs from people I don't know, making small talk, but adding little bits about my family, dog, present situation, etc that I couldn't remember saying here, but must have. A bit scary when you think of who can have access here.
I'm a bit in the "closing the barn door after the horse has bolted" situation but want to second Fan with the "be careful of what you pubicly divulge" warning.

ok i doubt that telling someone what town you are in is gonna cause a mass amount of trouble. i think sometimes we take some of this a little to far when someone gets hurt. if you dont want to tell someone where you live dont. thanks fan for the warning. but just the post enough was enough to terrify someone who has not been here very long into having nightmares about someone staring in their window. it was a wee bit dramatic my dear fanny. im sorry if you have gotten hurt but on the other side of the coin i have never been hurt by anyone here. i have given out my phone number, address, email ,and have never had a problem. we are not all monsters and i refuse to live in fear of one of two jackasses.

People are playing it safe and I think this is a nice thread. Sorry Fan that you were hurt by others however I agree that I have only support here.

OK message heard I think the best advice is for everyone to remember that we are here for support and sometimes feelings and emotions get very involved. People do get hurt. I hope that doesn't happen to anyone or to me and I am glad to hear you are getting better Fan.

So, I am not afraid I've lived in so many places, nobody could really know who I am. So, I tell you: Now I live outside Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is a beautiful suburbian area. I've lived there now for 28 years. We have a lemon tree, so, we never need to buy any, and also a avocado tree, that I planted years ago after I ate the fruit. Just like that, and now we will have so many avocados, we'll have to take them as birthday presents perhaps
So as I said, I've lived in many places in this world, but I still miss my infant landscape, in Finland.....

Having never traveled outside of the US (except for Canada), I have found everyone's posts very interesting. I love hearing about other parts of the world. One of my favorite books is Under the Tuscan Sun and its sequel, which is really just a travelogue of Italy. Some of you are fortunate to have mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, beautiful flora, fauna, and interesting species of animals right there in your backyard. My neighborhood is safe and kid-friendly, but a little dull in other senses. We do have a small cottage up north in the woods that we try to get to a few times a year. We have a pier on a little lake. It's my favorite place to sip a cup of coffee in the morning. Not hearing all of the city sounds is so relaxing! Nothing like the sound of the winds in the treetops and other sounds of nature all around.

Wow... this has been such a great read! It makes me realise that there are so many amazing places around the world, with only a small section that I would really deem unappealing.
Maxman good luck with a smooth house buying process. It's so exciting!
I know what you're referring to Fan. I've been a victim of cyber stalking by a deluded guy from Melbourne over a 6-9 month period, 2 years ago (I own a website with forum, very similar to this but obviously different subject). I'm not easily intimidated but it became very stressful and to the point that I was worried about my personal safety. He had my phone, address, everything and would post away on the forum as if we were having a relationship (he was married. I was single) I can no longer post on the forum, only administer it. The psycho is obsessed with the forum and can't get rid of him, so I have chosen to step back from it on a personal level and administer only. It turns out that he has Bipolar Disorder with delusions. Having said that, I was the unlucky one that was the target but I wouldn't hesitate in sharing my info again. For me, it's worth the risk for a great result of friendship. I reckon it's the guy who lives next door that is the greater threat than a potential cyber stalker. But stalking really is horrible when it happens to you. Hugely stressful! It's like the harder you try to escape the stalker, the more it fuels them. You can't rationalise with an irrational mind.

I spend many hours in my car driving country roads for a living. I am continually amazed I haven't hit the ditch more times than I have. I never look straight ahead. The countryside is much more interesting.
My area of southwestern Ontario, Canada has a gentle rich beauty that can break my heart.
I love all the seasons in the country. The spring with it's smell of wet earth and fresh rain. The winter land covered in quiet white with the air biting into your lungs. The sun in the summer soaking into my skin with the warmth of no other. And the fall with the sharp smell of crisp leaves and the golden rusty reds.
I have a little acre patch on the outskirts of a small rural town. Bunnies, moles, robins, toads, bats and fabulous bugs are just a few of my yard-mates.
I am blessed.

How beautiful you describe something that was my childhood. So simple, but so full of natural beaty. I really hope this year to go back to Finland. I was there end of 2005 because of my mother's funeral... So, not so nice

When I grew up, I often spent vacation time in the Allegheny foothills in New York. It was so beatiful and the mountains went on forever. I still remember - the trains in the middle of the night. Sometimes it is still hard to sleep if I don't hear the trains (my last house had a "toxic" train that traveled through town in the middle of the night and lulled me to sleep). During the school year, we lived near the water and I spent all my summer days on a boat or swimming - so I know I must always be near the water - which I am.
I live in Michigan, about 20 miles south of Port Huron. For Helen, I am near Walpole Island and so close to Sarnia, Ontario it is ridiculous to think of getting a passport. My back decks look out onto one of the bays on the chain of the Great Lakes. On a clear day, I can see Canada. On a quiet, warm night I can leave my doorwall in the bedroom open and hear the waves lapping up against the shore. So peaceful!
Otherwise, my city is small and could best be described as an old fishing village. My back area is wooded and when I sit on my upper deck, it is like living in an aviary. The birds (and I do not yet know all of their names) seem to consider me a part of their world and they swoop and buzz me while I sit outside with my coffee. Also, the seagulls are sometimes so loud I have to shut my window or I cannot talk on the phone!
I love it here!
