    My friends drinking...

So a very close friend of mine is a serious alcoholic. I know this because I am one too and her drinking puts mine to shame. So, she knows I quit and asks about once a week "are you still quit"? Which considering I know her well, she's hoping that I will go back to drinking so she has someone to commiserate with.

Anyway - For months she has had serious health issues. One of which is vomiting and diarrhea. She has a fatty liver among other things. She's had ultrasounds and other expensive tests and I'm certain she hasn't told the doctors the truth about her alcohol consumption. I talked to her today and she said she figured out that her stomach issues were coming from the vodka. Now she's switched to beer and no longer having issues. She said she had 12 beers last night and feels fine. No vomiting or diarrhea.

I won't waste my time arguing with her logic. I guess I'm just astounded at what lies we tell ourselves to protect our addiction.

Yep, that's a good one, Sake. Wonder if she was under the influence when she came up with that logic!
I guess if there is one thing I am grateful for about my drinking history is that I never lied to myself about what a serious problem it is. My mom is an alcoholic and so was her mom. Alcohol has basically been a demon throughout my whole life. I didn't begin my drinking career until I was in college, but I always knew where I was headed. The sad thing is I couldn't stop it. Well now I will, thanks to all of you.
You are doing great, Sake. Keep up the good work!

Harsh though it is you need to distance yourself from this, it could lead you back to drinking, even if only via annoyance.

Yeah I switched back from vodka to cider or wine, because vodka was just too lethal for me, I could drink it too quick. Didn't solve my problem with alcohol addiction.
I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

Drank within safe limits for almost 2 years

I agree with UK Blonde, my best friend who I love dearly has similar issues, I could almost have written your post. From seeing each other daily , we now have dinner maybe once a week and it hurts both of us but if it were otherwise I may be persuaded to join her on the vino. My friend has never spoken about vomiting but I guess it'll come, she is recovering from other injuries acquired while under the influence.

I hope your friend joins you in your quit, I keep trying to persuade my pal without success.

My best frind knew she was an Al and had made numerous attempts to quit. She said she was proud of me for staying the course. She finally for sober (I think) after the twin incident and religion she joined which pretty much pushed me out of her life.
Inreallyvreallybhope you all can hang on to your friend . Mine is gone and I miss her every day. It really hurts especially since we are sober...and we should be fighting the good fight together...

I used to drink 12 beers per night and I was "fine" for a while too....until I wasn't. The beer will catch up to her too. Isn't it sad how people will try every option EXCEPT quit? We switch up what we drink, limit our drinks, make bargains with ourselves....it really is easier just to stop completely!

Sake, denial is a part of this disease. My father-in-law died of cirrhosis of the liver, and he never admitted that the bottle contributed to his death. My aunt's boyfriend almost lost his life at the age of 42 due to alcohol, and never drank again. I wouldn't say he's the healthiest person, as he has long-term health issues due to drink. My ex-neighbor ended up in the hospital in January with end stages of cirrhosis of the liver due to drink. She almost needed a transplant but I guess there was a small bit of her liver that could regenerate, and it did. So I've seen it lots, too. Not pretty, and especially when there's denial, there's nothing you can do. All we can do is look out for ourselves, and that's plenty of work! Take care of yourself.
Sometimes what you're most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.

Yes - We can only help ourselves and lead by example.

Fortunately, my friend lives 5 hours away. So I see her but rarely. She was supposed to visit in September but when I told her I quit drinking she cancelled her trip (she was sick - supposedly).

Anyway, she did quit smoking...cold turkey after years of smoking. So there is always hope, but I won't waste my time trying to convince her.

So sad to hear of all the loss of life and prosperity to this vicious disease.

                      Hey Sake

Ain't it the truth? The delusional world we fashion for ourselves!

I have mentioned before my sister living with a drunk hoarder dude. He tells himself that beer is "better" to drink than whiskey, AND a new delusion---that smoking American Spirit
                      cigarettes is "better for you".

Once you strip it all down to the cold hard facts it is not funny, fun, or productive. It's just poison.

Kradle - You crack me up!
Ann - I know people who have switched to American spirit smokes..thinking it's just better.
Gettingitright - I hope you're right about that. Her dad (who she despised) died an alcoholic. It runs deep in her family...big surprise there.

She also recently married a self proclaimed functioning alcoholic. They're both awesome people...I hope things can change for them.

my wife is a big health nut on everything BUT cigs. She smokes the American Spirits, not a lot but enough that I wish she'd quit. She puts them out after a couple of drags, then relights. It is the worst smell. All the while believing she's being healthier about. I guess in her mind she is, she used to smoke the unfiltered Camels. BTW Philip Morris owns American Spirits, I do believe, acquired a few years back.

                            Hey Sam

I have had several people touting those cigarettes as "not as bad".

Nicotine is a powerful addiction, that's for sure.

So true K9 lover! Amazing the games you can play when you are under the spell of AL.
I've certainly played the games over the 35 years on the stuff....
