This med seems very heavy duty, we have to admit it carries some pretty serious side-effects, yet I don't see myself being successful without it. I've read lots of posts on Topa but can anyone vouch for some success on it without too many side-effects? Is it better to go for Campral? Any comments appreciated. As always, Em

Were others scared of Topa?
I feel really torn like a tug of war rope. On the one hand, I can't wait to get started with the entirety of this program. I got an appt with my psychiatrist on the 21st to get some Topa. Yet at the other end of the rope I'm really scared of that part of the deal. What if I can't remember what I want to say? What if I freak out?

Em, you've got lots of choices! There is topa and campral, naltrexone (sp?) and others. Keep up with the research, and read 7 Weeks to Sobriety. With all the supplements and meds out there, you are sure to find YOUR WAY OUT if you keep a steady heart and keep searching.
Keep the faith!!

Hi Grace:
Topa is wonderful...just would like to suggest "taking it slow"...i am off of it now, for awhile and just doing supps...as I was having some cognitive difficulty (nothing overly serious) I quit after 6 wks at 200 mg...so far so good for me...it is not scarey if you go slow. (really)

Em,
I think the side effects you have read about have scared you a wee bit much... but would never recommend not being cautious. I don't know of anyone who has freaked out, or cant remember anything. For the average person, it's more like drawing little blanks here and there like... standing in front of the fridge and scratching your head and having to remember what you wanted, and then... "Oh yeah! it was an apple!" Then you walk off biting the apple thinking.. "Okay.. that was a little strange." That's about it!" And actually, that only happened to me about twice.. and I am the QUEEN of side effects. And yes, little tingling in the toes when I wasnt crossing my legs... but only lasted a few seconds here and there, and then went away never to return. poof. Cant take much of anything for more than two days if it has side effects I cant handle. Topa made me a little sleepy after 75 mg, and like others, cant go past that, but get good effect with that dosage. Whenever I try to go over 75 mg, I get too sleepy to work, so that's why I stay at 75 mg. Sleepy is the worst side effect, but only after 75 mg. Have you ever been on an anti-depressant before? If so, I would just say those side effects are 100 times worse. If you can take that, Topa is a breeze. Just my personal experience!

Sleepy actually sounds kinda nice to me. I've been on effexor for a few years. Since taking it, I can't take naps anymore.
I used to love summer naps at the beach or in the sunroom.
Don't know why effexor has that side effect for me but it does. I also take a small dose of trazedone at night to help with insomnia. Maybe I'll be able to cut that out. Anyways, I'm glad to hear that you have positive things to say about
Topa. And I will go slow. Em

I feel like I could be the walking advertisement for topa, but for me this medicine has truly been a life saver. I too was afraid of the potential side effects and opted to try Campral first. However, after several weeks on Campral, I was severely disappointed to find no benefit at all, and major stomach upset. Therefore, I began the Topa, and after finding no side effects, and no benefits either at the lower dose, I began to titrate up to 75 mgs, and then to 100 mgs. Magic happened. For the first time in about 25 years, I just didn't want to have a drink. It truly blew my mind. It has been over a month, and basically I have had few or no cravings, and on the rare occassion I have tried to have a glass or two of wine, I don't get a "buzz" and have no interest in having any more. Truly amazing. The only side effect I have noticed is that I am a little more tired than usual, and can sleep as much as 9 hours a night, if time permits. However, that seems to be getting better recently.
Good luck
Beth
