Raggsy - we're cooking pork the day before to have cold on Christmas day (they're mad for a bit of cold meat over here) roast turkey, roast taties (I'm gonna have to source some duck fat) and I like the sound of HPs rice salad too. And some veggies of course - green ones, orange ones etc. But no mangoes over here...I have severe cravings for mangoes now...it's gonna be a sad sad Christmas without them...

Doctors reveal 'harmful' standards of medical care for asylum seekers | World news | theguardian.com
As you know, Mr B is a mental health nurse. Amongst his friends are several people who have come back from detention centers extremely distressed, and feeling professionally compromised. The demands that are put on them by their employers are dictated to by the immigration authorities. You dont get to help people.
There's a reason why all those employment conditions sound attractive. The cost you pay is the price of your soul.
I'm sorry to not be able to be more supportive.
Yo Missy. As Happs said, you ARE being supportive by opening up the convo, so thanks. All comments are much appreciated Roo's. It's an outrageous state of affairs up there, and this article above is even more incentive and reason for good, passionate people to go there.
I'm not interested in any sort of dictatorial, key carrying, watchdog sort of role. Nope. The bureaucrats will do what they will do. I can't influence them, but i can influence the people i work with in the front line. I am interested in working there as part of some sort of art and rehab programs (i may need to create one i hear) where i can inspire, educate, encourage, and instill hope where hope may be fading. I suspect there is an opportunity for someone (me?) to run a kind of music therapy and mindfulness program with the purpose to support people to regain or retain self worth, self esteem, self confidence, and sense of self, identity. Through music. In my role as a mental health outreach worker the last few years, and as a working musician, i know the power of face to face connection. If i can get an opportunity to do this for even 15 minutes a day, i know it can make a difference, because i have seen it happen, even in the midst of an otherwise hostile repressive environment. Connection.
Others can tackle the politicians and bureaucracy. That's not my forte. My forte is people, so i will try to make a difference there, in the front line, face to face. It's about Connection.
Of course, if there is no flexibility for such a program or anything like it, and art/music programs of any sort are not allowed, then i have a bigger challenge. Like lot's of things, it may just mean that change has to begin on the shop floor, in the front line, from within. I reckon it's worth a crack.
Let's hope changes recommended in that above Doc's report are actioned immediately.
Have a pearler y'all. Any further comments welcome. A few heads are better than one!

Hi Kooka,
Well, you really are experiencing 4 seasons in one day!
I got this at Woolworths this morning. $11.99 for 320 grams. So maybe you can get it over there.
Coles also stocks it.
What a bugger not having mangos. It is part of the Aussie Christmas tradition innit?
I bought a tray of them and I've made ice blocks ready for mango lassis on Boxing Day.
Still have a couple left for brekky tomorrow.
pork cold. That sounds good. I might buy a little roast tomorrow and cook it up Tuesday.
Got heaps of apple sauce here... mix with a bit of mustard and voila!

Morning little ones.
Rags, Green goddess dressing is made with pureed avocados and as it happens will be on my Xmas menu too. We're going trad with roast and veg. I normally make an icecream bombe as well. Delish.
I am also putting a great deal of thought into my bucket list goals for this year as well. We should start unveiling soon.
Mr G I think that sounds like the most amazing adventure, and I think you've got the skills to handle the challenges. There has got to be a way to be a part of the solution, and how better to do that than commit and do something rather than be horrified from the sidelines?
As a matter of fact I read that yesterday and haven't stopped thinking about it since. That is exactly the kind of situation that I could contribute to as well.
CAKES!!! Big waveroo! Enjoy your Xmas in that beautiful country.
Time to do a forensic read back.If your 8 year old self met you, would they be proud?

Morning all,
Man, what a good sleep. Much needed after an intense but enjoyable working weekend. Remembering my old avocado tree fondly after reading of green goddess and avocado recipes. Noice.
I read with interest your interest in our refugee situation Jonesy. Will keep you posted as to what i'm up to there. A couple of things for me to consider first. My studies, my current recharge/freer lifestyle i'm benefitting from. Might have to nail that album of mine first. Time will reveal all. I wish to add that i am not an 'airy fairy' sort of bloke looking at our refugee situation through rose coloured glasses. There are a lot of things i cannot change for our incarcerated friends at this point. Doc's and nurses have expressed frustration with bureaucracy over service delivery, as they are not getting the tools they need to do the job properly. The difference for someone like me in this equation is that the tools i need are already there. A guitar and keyboard. And me. Bureaucracy doesn't matter whilst those tools are present. No-one else can dictate or control all that people share and experience through a music session, and the communication, empowerment and connection that brings with it. This is enough to do meaningful work. This is not a 'hippy drivel' feel good vague approach. This stuff works. Their is a solid, clear purpose behind the guitars and the goofy boofhead smile. The purpose is clear. Work that empowers, instills hope, and keeps dreams alive. The simple, basic, daily living stuff. Starting with small steps.

Hello lovelies!
Just killing some hours at the desk of command - it's expected you know.....
Salute to Mr G.
I'm just about ready for Christmas. Spent way too many $.
I must be getting old and really cranky. I'm usually not that bothered by the heat, but I've been moaning like a hairy goat these past few days. I've been in the pool every night just before bed because I'm still HOT!! I did sleep last night, which was a b.o.n.u.s.
I've made the neighbours (who are friendly with FFH) a small Christmas cake each. I'll deliver this evening.
Laters praps......It is not what we do, but how much love we put into the doing.

G I really hope that it all works out. I certainly believe, as you do, in the healing power of music :l
Angel - I had a mango for you today you should be able to get them in Ak but they won't be as good as the Queensland ones. Sorry! I've been a bit of a mango glutton over the last week ....
My best staff member resigned today. She rang me about an hour ago - got offered a fabulous opportunity that I fully support her taking. But it is a bit of a sign that everyone can see the writing on the wall. I would really like to do the same myself but I feel a bit obligated to manage things for the staff. I feel a bit pissed off though that I wanted to have a week not thinking about work and now my head is back in it.Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn

Missy - I wrote a post when you were talking about you're job a while back, but I lost it. Sorry to hear about your staffer leaving. With enormous regard and much love - you're way too good for that place. They will be thinking they've hit the jackpot scoring you. Think carefully about your options, I reckon you could and most certainly would pull an almighty position here in OZ elsewhere!
I hope you don't mind me saying......It is not what we do, but how much love we put into the doing.
