For me it's like a bee buzzing around my head. I can be walking around the grocery store, not thinking about anything but what I'm going to make for dinner and then a bee wham hits the side of my head. I could have walked by the beer isle on the way to the cheese ten times without thinking about it, but when the bee has hit it makes it all different. If I resist a swarm of bees come, and they are all swarming around my head. "What's the big deal, can't you be normal? Lots of people buy beer every day and it doesn't cause a national disaster, what's your problem?" Only these thoughts come much faster than I can type. If I keep walking and continue to the cheese a lot of times it will dissipate, or the swarm may follow me out of the store and continue to pester me all the way home. "There's Plaid Pantry, I wonder if that yummy winter micro brew is out, don't you just want to stop and check?" Sometimes I feel caught, like a bird staring into the eyes of a cobra. Sometimes I totally believe the voice and follow along with joy. Sometimes I walk out of the swarm and distract myself with other things. But it rarely ever helps to answer the swarm directly.

love the buzzing bee description. that sums things up very well. just gotta watch out for the sting.
mamabear, funny you should mention being attracted to the serial killer, its something I have been thinking about recently. well not exactly serial killers. I have been thinking about how I should try and nurture friendships with positive people (hoping that it rubs off on me) and realized that I do tend to be attracted to the more 'oddball' people. im not talking sexually attracted (though I suppose that can be true as well), just the generally more odd or quirky. unfortunately these people also tend to be the more negative and 'dangerous'. apart from my alcoholic side im pretty sensible and responsible, possibly a bit quirky but in a sensible, responsible way. I guess that's the Jekyll and hyde in me coming out.
anyway I think I will carry a fly swatter or a tin of insect spray to be armed against that pesky bee that keeps buzzing meToday is the tomorrow i worried about yesterday and it turned out fine

Good idea Spuds
I am the boss at my job and I always have to be the cheerleader and Perky Patty. It's exhausting many days, as people tend to be so darn negative and self-focused.
I try to find positive friends to lean on when I am feeling discouraged. I have on e in particular that I will call, and she'll say..."Oh Jan....just look at it this way..." and she always helps.
I like quirky, artistic people too....but as I age I find peaceful spiritual people more attractive.I love my family more than alcohol.:h
Live in the Solution....not the problem
