    Achievements/celebration thread

Hello friends, this thread is here to celebrate the little things that keep us going. I've been keeping a wee diary this time around. At the end of each day, I make a note of the good things that have happened that day as a result of me being sober. I try to do this right down to the littlest thing, purely because there are so many benefits, big and small, from being AL free for just one day. I then read it first thing next morning to reinforce my positive attitude and my gratitude for the chance to be sober for another day.

I was looking over this diary this evening, there's a hell of a lot of good stuff in there, but I thought I'd share my most standout moment with you.

After about a month of being sober, I was getting used to the 'you look great' comments, the praise from my boss at work ( I love my job, but AL was robbing me of the passion and commitment that comes so easily to the sober me!) everything was going really well. I felt really good, was running again at the gym and working out, and spending more time socialising, all of this was great.

Around this time I was out one night for a meal with my daughter (she's grown up, lives with her fianc? away from home, but we are very close and spend a good bit of time together still). We had a great time. There was none of the tension that my drinking used to cause between us, I didn't even give al a thought that night, even though the restaurant was licensed and she had a glass of wine.

As we got up to leave, breathless from laughing, she grabbed my hand and said 'it's so good to have you back Mum'. Eight words. Alcohol has never given me the high that I felt that night, just from those eight words. I've been sober for a further two months since then, and if I ever feel a slip coming on, a moment of weakness, I think about those words, and the love and pride behind them.

Every day, every hour sober is an achievement and a reason to celebrate. depending on where you are in your journey, it could be as simple as getting out of bed and brushing your teeth. It's a start. It's a positive.

This thread is all about the positives, big and small, let's celebrate them.

Oh BH that bought a tear to my eye, its the little things that count definitely.

Like you my biggest achievement was when my children said to me "mum I am so proud of you" and for them I keep myself sober and always will.

I don't mean it as tearjerker Av, more of a reality check :l

Best weekend ever in New Orleans. Totally sober the whole time. I had a decaf espresso and got so buzzed we both laughed. What a light weight. We were both walking and passing a really blue house. I live in the blue house now I told her out of no where. We both cracked up and she said mother you are high. I said yes, on having fun.

A completely sober December! 10+ sober parties. Zero regret. Waking up Christmas morning feeling great and completely focused on my kids rather than how awful I felt as well. New Year's day with one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had.

the little things in life are really the big things. now we don't miss them or ruin them with drinking. I find joy in every little thing, from getting up early enough to make my family smoothies to walking my dogs in the early morning, to being out of bed and not hung over all day. the fact that my family is forgiving of my past behavior and are willing to tell me how proud they are of me and how much they love me is the icing on the sweet cake of everyday sobriety.

                      peace!

I was taking care of a three year old girl yesterday and she commented on how white my eyes were and I said really what color are they usually and she said blue, she still mixes up her colors and obviously meant red! Out of the mouths of babes. She has known me her whole life and probably just thought that was my usual state. Pretty sad but I plan to change that.

Thanks for staring this thread, BH, it really is the little things that keep us going. I'm so glad you got an affirmation from you daughter!

LOL Bastet! Some great replies here folks, well done. Here's another little thing. When I was drinking I used to need handfuls of OTC painkillers to get me through the day. Pounding headaches, bones aching, and just generally feeling rotten. I can't remember the last time I had a headache now. I haven't taken a painkiller since early on in my quit. I feel so much fitter and healthier all round!

This is an amazing thread! We definitely need one here! Feeling as well as looking beautiful, not only because my skin is looking better, but because I feel better about myself; I don't have to lie to myself and try to hide this dark secret of my drinking! So much freer!

Just happened on this Hedgey - great thread and hit a chord with me on the daughter thing. Brought a tear to this old eye too

My own daughter hasn't said much but .... I could see her almost glowing with pride over Christmas - that I was in the same mood for the full time - and picking up people & dropping them - something I've never done.
She has herself since January stopped drinking.
She was watching me for a few months & at first I thought I'd have to put on a front of enjoying myself - BUT...... I honestly didn't need to and she is amazed I think.:goodjob:
