New Documentary -Alcohol will kill you

I'll watch that later. There's another documentary on there, by Cherry Healey Old before your time I think the title is. What I found scary is when they interviewed young people out drinking who thought they were fine, that was me 15-20 years ago.

I disagree with the 'pricing argument. I think they are missing the point entirely, alcohol consumption in my opinion starts with a culture. We see people on here who can't face social events because they'll be expected to drink, it's seen as wierd if you don't drink and that in my opinion is WRONG and drinking alcohol has become acceptable even at harmful levels (which people don't realise is not very high).

Here's another good documentary worth watching from the National Geographic Channel called Utterly Addicted to Alcohol:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQu7yzV_9N4
In the middle of my life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood, as I had lost the straight path. It is a difficult thing to speak about, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood is. Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

Sorry UK Blonde but I think the pricing argument is certainly valid. We have the same problem here ? a similar drinking culture to the UK (on the whole) and cheap booze. It used to be very expensive and drinking wine at home every night was almost unheard of. At least it was here until c the 1990s. It was also a class thing ? how many working class women went home from work (many worked in the home anyway) and consumed a bottle of cheap wine. There was no money to do this with.

Yes, there is the problem of people thinking they can?t face a social event pre-loaded but there is also the huge issue of the home drinkers - many who don?t realise the damage they are doing to themselves. The damage to drinkers ? who see themselves probably as ?moderate? or social drinkers (and the doco showed the wriggle-room some moderates give to their healthy AL limits)

I also think the labelling issue is important ? there could be ways to make the message stronger. But the easy way out is to single out women of reproductive bearing age (I am not down-playing FASD here).

Finally ? I have long been fed-up with the advertising laws in my country ? and the doco spoke to this in the UK./EC. But There are regulations against advertising for smokes .

And more liver awareness would be a good thing I think.

I didn?t know about the liver stiffness test they showed ? has anyone ever had this test? Its probably a lot more complicated to read the results than the doco suggested.

So all in all ? I appreciated the doco because it helped to put things in the wider picture ? with some ideas for change. Plus I am very interested in how industry uses academic experts to validate /denounce commercial objectives.

            Rant over!

The red wine is good for you brigade always get me going. It's one 125ml glass not half a bottle, 1 or 2 and even then that small amount is not necessarily any better than no alcohol at all.

Great documentary. Thanks treetops. It's amazing how this has become such an epidemic. I like it when they said that we have heart awareness, cancer awareness, and so many health related awarenesses, and why not liver awareness? That's true!

On liver awareness - I also heard an interesting programme yesterday about toxins in our daily lives.
How many people worry about this - but overlook eliminating one of the most obvious toxins from their lives?

Liver awareness would not just be about AL of course - so many modern medications do havoc with the liver.
Plus there is the cholesterol-liver link. Its where cholesterol is processed I think. Many people think the answer to avoiding heart attacks etc centres on the heart/arteries - but the old liver has a leading role here too.

Kudos to the drs and nurses who work with liver-related diseases. It must be so frustrating at times.
with the doco - I really felt for the working class bloke from Sheffield - who was having 'drainage' every 2 weeks.

Thanks, treetops, for recommending this documentary. I think ACCESS is a huge issue. When I was growing up you had to go to a liquor store for wine or beer. This ubiquitous access may coincide with the 50% increase in consumption in the past several decades. Along with the huge marketing of alcohol in the movie and television industry. The commercial I hate the most -- the people on Cougartown or whatever it is called who all have a huge glass of wine in their hands.

I emigrated from the UK so this doco came as no surprise......it more felt like ' about time!'

There is a strong booze culture in New Zealand though and I see it as most worrying in my middle aged female clients drinking their bottle of wine ( or two? ) every night. When I tell them I do not drink many express concern at their own drinking but stop short of accepting there is a problem.

I do see a link with poor diet too - obesity can cause liver disease and like alcohol so many people say they are 'treating' themselves, this cereal is 'healthy' when it's full of sugars, really misunderstanding most of the stuff we consider 'normal' is infact not what we were intended to eat and a treat is like once a week not every day, every meal.

It's s right mess then folk are in hospital with lung cancer (smoking), on medications for onset diabetes but still it's still 'treat' yourself, live is hard, play hard culture.

50-100 years ago yes it was hard, you didn't live so long and so didn't matter, also people didn't have quite the access they do now but there were still problems.

Quite the eye opener, isn't it? I also watched the other one.. Old before my time.

Loved how the wine guy didn't think that availability, low price, and accessibility had anything to do with consumption.

I know he's controversial, but I saw an interview with Dr. David Nutt and he said the same thing about pricing and availability. We can drink far more cheaply at home now than at any point in the past.

Also, the link with poor diet is well-taken. I never understood while I was drinking heavily why I never ate, and the National Geographic Channel documentary explains it simply and clearly. The body goes into "defense" mode in an attempt to keep the poison out. The diaphragm contracts around the stomach shrinking it. Which explains how you can feel ravenously hungry but have absolutely no desire to eat. The subject of that documentary eats just one day's worth of calories during an entire week.
