I rarely drank from age 18-42, and many of those years were totally AF. I just didn't like the feeling. After I turned 40, wham! I have often wondered if it was hormonal. ....why now? Great thread Scooby.

              When did you just *know*

I think I started drinking about when I was learning to walk. My folks had a New Year's Eve party, I was about 1 or 2 yrs old & I could just reach anything on the coffee table...
They found me passed out in the corner later.
Later (at about 12 or 13 yrs) my mom used to buy strawberry wine & let me have some, & my Dad would let me & my brother share a beer every so often.
After that it was beer keggers on a regular basis on weekends all thru high school. With a bottle of MD 20/20 drank on the way...just to get started...
Yep, both of my Grandpas drank, so does my Dad.

I never really admitted I had a problem untill I was about 30. At that point I was with someone who was a serious "power tripper".. so that didn't work...I guess after that it seemed too late...Not really though.

I'm now 46. Still a work in progress.

                  When did you just *know*

It's been ages since I've posted. I haven't been a good girl lately either........

Here it goes.......the honesty helps me get perspective towards my goal(s).

                  1. At what age did you first have a drink ie get drunk?I was 16. I got into my Grandpa's liquor cabinet. Well, my cousins and I did. We sorrily tried to make Mai Tai's because that sounded cool to us.

                  2. Roughly at what age did you notice your alcohol consumption progress after that first drunk episode?Hmmmmm off and on after the age of 27. I didn't drink again from my 16 yr. old incident until I went out to my first club when I was 22. Between 16 and 22 I may have had a glass of wine at a wedding or a family friends house. At age 27, I realize my first marriage was a "Joke" and I drank to real excess everytime I went out with friends to clubs or houseparties. There were still moments where I could stay in control or atleast that's how it felt.......

                  3. Roughly at what stage did you realise that you *might* have a drinking problem and decide to try to moderate/abstain? In MY head I could feel the control slip away around 30. I had left my first Husband and still had major issues to deal with.....

                  4. Roughly at what age did you decide that you definitely had a drinking problem? 33 a few months before my Feb. B'Day. I called (whilst drinking.....I drank more as we talked-- I was drinking shots) my Dad whom I have issues with and I ended up cutting myself. I hadn't cut myself since I was in High School.

                  5. Do you have a parent who has a drinking problem? Genetically? I'm not sure........I'm adopted. So, who know's? I am a full blood Native American. So, I know that counts as strike against me. My Adopted Dad [I was adopted as a baby(10 month) and in foster homes before that] admitted to being an alcoholic before they adopted me. He stopped about a year or more after they adopted me. During that adoption period Mom says He never drank around me or her it was all done while he was over seas in Thailand. He quit cold turkey before that tour ended. He says he had a problem since he was 16. Mom says she never saw it.......Go figure.

                  6. Do you have a grandparent who had/has a drinking problem? Look at my previous answer. Who Knows?

                  7. How old are you now? I'm 34 now.

oke: I think this post and seeing it written out will help me. Maybe not right away but it should help me sort through some of the emotional "crap"...Thanks :h :fingers:
