      Re: x-pests

      I am sorry Tawny ....

It is fishfly season here. Our quaint waterside town even has a fishfly festival. The nasty little bugs cover every building and swarm through the air. They cover my office windows and darken the sun, dying on my screens and leaving their nasty little carcasses to float away on a good strong breeze - I hope.

During my unhealth craze of last week .... when I went to McDonald's, they were banging up against my car windows and hood, like out of the horror movie The Birds. The poor little teen was afraid to open the window. With unsaid communication, we simply understood that we would "time" our window of vulnerabilities, and she quickly passed me my contraband transfat taters and sugar. I am being very healthy this week.

There are so many, with such short life spans, they die in such great numbers, their bodies piling up in drifts sometimes a foot high reeking of rotting flesh. So gross!!! I cannot ride my bike because they go "pop, pop, pop."

I feel for you tawny. Hope you find solution ....

          Re: x-pests

tawny, you made me laugh today--I was just telling a friend about an old job I had working for a
Cyril Smith, who had a farm way out in horse country, and in the winter he had a caretaker. The caretaker would occasionally call and say, "Hello, may I thpeak to Mithter Thyril Thmith? Thith is Mithter Thtumpf, that ith Eth-T-U-M-P-F." To which I would reply, "I'm thorry Mither Thumpf, Mithter Thmith ith not in" and then dissolve laughter because I SWEAR I truly did not mean to mimic him, but I did every time, to the point I had to have an office mate answer his calls for me!!

Any REAL soap, not detergent, but fatty soap, dissolved in water to make a good sudsy solution, will help get rid of thripth, etc. But dish detergent won't do it. Health food store for fat-based soap. Wreakth havoc on my aphidth.

          Hugs

It's japanese beetle season here...killing all of our fruit trees and attacking me too. They are just nasty and disgusting.

              Tawny, my precious,

I have absolutely nothing by way of horticultural advice but would be very happy (and believe Kate would join right in with me) to read to you in unison and in monotone a story that would leave you bonkers and drive you to rush upon the pestilence and mow them down in a great flurry of insanity.

              Yours always,
              Beryl

                  Kate O'My Heart,

We know perfectly well dull is not in your repertoire (an inability to come up with a name for our sure-to-be world famous act notwithstanding) so keep up the honing and I'll round up a straightjacket. Maybe I should get an extra couple for you and me as potential uniforms for the trio. What think you?

I'm tottering off to bed with the most excellent vision of Tawny zooming madly amongst her Gum Trees. Who says you can't have fun without alcohol?

We need to gather again soon in the chat room for futher plotting.

                    Re: Thank you all

Thank you all for your words of empathy and support but I have decided I can no longer apply my namby-pamby hippy greenie approach to this problem. Soap and garlic and chili sprays just don't cut it. I'll bring out the BIG guns.

Thank you Kate and Beryl - I do believe you are right - boring the little bastards to death is the only way to go. I'm even ok with the straighjacket idea, as long as it's tastefully monogrammed.

As for a name - how about "Beryl and the Sap-suckers?"
Or just plain old "Katus Interruptus".

A chat session is essential !
