Anyone in the First Week of Their Unpteenth Quit?

I have been around a lot more elderly folks lately and really... You do stop and think.
Alcohol certainly cannot help, but so many people drink it is easy to dismiss.
I really think the 'fun' isnt worth the risk. Its not even very fun anymore.
(AF since 17 May 2014) 2 years 5 months sober

Eloise, I too worry about how all the al has effected my body. I try and counter the damage by drinking lots of water and eating healthy.
Cmh, I have gotten shaky also after a few quits. That's scary stuff! One time it was very bad.

My mother is the perfect example of what I don't want to become at her age (84).

She is only interested in where her next drink is coming from. She is angry, crabby and frail. I am my mother physically (tiny and petite) and reactively (avoid conflict by curling in a ball) so I have to be careful.

You don't have to actually hit a wall to be able to quit but you have to know 100% that you want to stop the insanity and we are all there right?

For myself I try to focus on the people that I want to be like - smart as a whip. I credit how far I've gotten despite AL on that. Chief, been looking at SMART recovery as Albert Ellis is one of my heroes. Is that where you get the term Beast when talking about AL?

The Beast comes from Rational Recovery. I read a book a couple years ago called The Small Book which describes the Rational Recovery concept and it hit home with me.

It sounds like you all are feeling like I do......enough is enough. It's time to get off this roller coaster. I equate drinking and The Beast with boxing. The Beast is always ready to fight you and kick your ass if you step into the ring with him. But....if you don't step into the ring he can never touch you. If you don't take that first drink you will never have the next 10 or 12 and you will win. It's as simple as that.

Any thought of taking that first drink is merely The Beast luring you into the ring. Once you recognize this you are home free.

              We can all do this.

Planning to meet a friend for Friday night live at the Ellis institute. Not this Friday but my mentor when I was working on the psych unit. More than a bit of a relief as she's a nurse specializing in addiction. Been so embarrassed that I've gone from helping to needing help. Only told her I drink too much. Will never define myself as an alcoholic. We are all so much more than that.
Thanks for the clarification Chief. Ellis was the founder of rational emotive behavioralism. Wonder if his work had something to do with rational recovery too.
I try to be interested in the journey rather than depressed about my drinking. The result so far is I am only diseased (lack of ease, uncomfortable) for a couple of hours on my worst day. Doesn't make it OK just easier to deal with

Successful Day 1. Now on to day 2. Who would think it would be so difficult to not do something? Today I have Physical Therapy, need to finish painting and grandkids are spending the night. Trying to have a plan to keep busy each day. Alcohol has sapped my motivation for so long, time to get going.

Not feeling as strong today as I have been. The beast is lurking. I have a doctors appointment this afternoon and I am sure that is what is causing my aniexty. I will run this morning and do a little shopping this afternoon. Hoping that will help. I'll check in later.
                        We can do this!

CMH, I said the same thing on my day two to hubby. "Who knew this would be so hard?". He was so surprised that I thought it should be easier. He's watched my struggle with AL for years and knew this wouldn't be a cake walk for me. With that said.... Today is day 39 for me and it does get easier..so much easier. Just get those days behind you. Keep coming here and checking in when you feel that struggle coming on.

Lizann, Good luck at the doc this afternoon. You can add "dr apts" to your list of triggers and plan for them now that you know it will happen. I think that's the best part of this AF life. You can see things clearly and address them. In my drinking past, I didn't have the tools to do that. I'll be watching for you post back.

Morning all!!! I'm packing for my camping trip and feeling strong thanks to all of you at MWO!

Hi Everyone, CMH, it is hard at the beginning but take it moment by moment, craving by craving..

I have read recently that we should stand back and 'watch' our cravings without action or judgement... like a wisp of smoke in the sky it will slowly dissipate from our 'view'. just try to ride it out with no reaction or action.

Living as much as possible in the present moment... seems to help.

Doctors visit didn't work out as well as I had planned, further tests are needed. I'm numb, but doing ok.
