Hi Liz and Open,
Glad you have joined us. Yes, this is a very nice thread to just discuss the everyday things that pop up with being AF.
I too am very new to this, but have found these friends to be extremely helpful and understanding.
Liz - way to go coming back and getting back at it. That is the important thing. We are here to help and listen.
Good morning to all.
Today is going to be a techy day. I have given my 14 yr old my old cell phone, (which he knows more then I do about), but we need to go buy a new sim card.
And - we gave my hubby a tablet for christmas, and trying to teach an old dog new tricks. hahaha. Right now he claims the tablet is not working correctly
Fun and funny.
I actually have a weekend off, so enjoying a bit of a quiet day to start.
Hope everyone is having a great day.

Me again,
Question for some of you "old quitters".
Now that the holidays are over, and we are moving into the day to day routine again, did you guys let your guard down and were you tempted more?
I am not at this point, it is not an issue. But I wondered if that might be a common issue and something to be aware of.
I have also found some AF wine and substitutes (flavored water) to drink over the holidays. I have had it in a wine glass. I was thinking this might be a mistake. It was ok over the holiday, when this was so new to me, but I have not broken the habit then, and it might be easy to slide the wrong way. What do you guys do? Have you changed the habit completely or just substituted?
Just some things for thought as I move into my new style of life and LIVING.
thanks,
BG

BG, that is too funny lol, I'll be sure to tell Bubba! For me, I can be around other people drinking in a house setting, but the restaurant setting is still a bit much for me at this point in time. I have done it a few times, but watching all the others around me in the restaurant, eating, drinking, laughing, talking etc. gets to me. Not in a way that it makes me want to drink, but disappointed in myself that I lost the privledge of being a social drinker. As far as na beverages, I avoid them like the plague, I never drank for the taste, I drank to get drunk so there's no point in teasing myself with make believe beer lol
Have a great day my friends, remember, don't quit on your quit!.Quitting and staying quit isn't easy, its learning a whole new way of thinking. It's accepting a new way of life, and not just accepting it, embracing it...
Worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Just get through today. Tomorrow will look after itself when it becomes today, because today is all we have to think about.

Returning to MWO after about two years and this was the first thread i stumbled upon as the title stood out to me. I'm on day 3 of my quit- my sister who also struggles with alcohol and i agreed to do a dry January but I'm hoping to make this last. The last time I tried to do a month AF i lasted two weeks and cracked as soon as I was invited to a bar. Tonight I went to dinner with a friend and was totally dreading being in a restaurant with alcohol, luckily my friend wasn't drinking and when I told my waiter I wasn't drinking tonight after he asked the dreaded question "would you like anything to drink besides water?" he promptly removed my wine glass. I ended up sipping on a delicious sparkling water with a splash of cranberry and a squeeze of lime. Felt like my first hurdle was cleared! I just hope I can keep this going...

IDA, hang in there, you can do it. Just think how good it feels to wake up with no hangover. Find things to be grateful for like waking up with no hangover and actually remembering what happened the night before. Not having wine mouth or digestive problems in the morning. Not being bloated.
Being able to drive home and not regretting anything that happened last night.
take it day by day and just don't drink today ok?Narilly

I just have to say, I have tried to quit drinking a million times. The first time I went to AA was when I was 17! In 1982, But of course, I did not have a problem (ya right) so I kept on drinking.
My next visit to AA was in 2000 2003, but I kept drinking. Joined MWO 2006 to Moderate (whatever That means). Next AA visit in 2009, quit for 3 months. Came back to MWO 2013 and had a few relapses then finally quit April 12, 2014.
It took a Long time for me to get here. I have relapsed over and over. Being part of a group really helped me this time. The Loamers thread was good for me and any of you who want to post there are welcome.
It is in the monthly abstinence section and then Loamers. Everyone is welcome.
A lot of bad things have happened over my years of drinking and it took a long time for me to get here. It still is a struggle for me sometimes. This Christmas was tough but I made it. I posted here and that really helped.
I am 50 years old and I saw a post here by someone who was 70 saying they wished they quit 20 years ago. I decided that Now is my chance. I don't want to live the next 20 years in an alcoholic haze. I won't get that time back.
Hang in there everyone YOU can do it.Narilly

Hi Everyone and a BIG Congrats to our superhero Ginger!!!!!! We are all so proud of you and so glad you are here. You're always giving good advice and supporting everyone here no matter what stage of their quit they are in. Thanks for being you, Ginger....
As for the NA drinks, I, too, don't drink them. On one of my previuos quits I started drinking NA beer and it wasn't long before The Beast would say, " you can have NA beers and then just drink one regular beer, then go back to NA".........that didn't last long at all. Before I knew it I was right back to where I started from. In my opinion, if you're going to quit drinking, then quit drinking. Why drink something that is fake. All it does is tempt you.
I'm so glad to see some new faces here....and Welcome Back Liz! I've been thinking about you, hoping you'd be back....
I went to the gym today and ran for 30 minutes then swam for an hour. I feel good and am about ready for bed. I have to get up at 4:30 to get ready for work. It was in the 50's yesterday and is suppose to go down in the teens tonight and start snowing. I guess we're finally going to get winter here in Ohio.
Keep checking in everyone and enjoy your AFness.......Own it!!!!

Hi Cowboy and Chief,
Thanks for your input.
That is exactly what I was concerned about - just slipping back into the habit. Mine is definitely a habit. So I think I need to change that up completely. Sit at a different spot, keep busy with other things, sip on tea if need be. Something hot, not like a cold wine.
I have not been out to a restaurant yet. That is also a big trigger for me. I think I will feel the same way as you Cowboy, disappointed I lost the privilege to be a social drinker. I will save this test for a few months I think.
Welcome to our new posters and thanks for your stories. We are all different, yet all the same - interesting.
Glad you are here.
