Thank you everyone and especially my dear friend Rusty for starting this thread!! Its funny, a few weeks ago I was very excited about this anniversary but then totally forgot about it all day until I saw an email from Rusty! I thank my higher power daily for giving me the strength to be AF these 4 years. IT is never far from my mind how AL made me feel those last years of my addiction. I've gone through some great times and some really bad times and I shutter to think how I would have handled each and every one drunk and hung over. Most likely I wouldn't be here in this life.
I encourage anyone new to sobriety to keep at it. It is very hard, don't get me wrong but staying AF can be done. Take it ODAT, write in a journal, be active in the forum, take the supplements, listen to the CDs-whatever you need to do to protect your sobriety. It then gets easier and easier. I drank heavily for over 30 years-the first 20 I didn't realize it and the last ten I agonized over it. I can tell you honestly that now it's hard to remember what it was like every nite. I rarely even think about having a drink. My triggers are gone. But if I do pine for a glass of wine or feel sorry for myself because I can't drink like a "normal" person, I just think back to the last hangover I had and how rock bottom it was for me. I never want to go through that again and just thinking about it makes me nauseous.
