You'll need a razor knife and some vapor barrier. Screw it into the studs. Does it look like 1/2 inch backer board? If you have a Lowe's or Home Depot, you might find a guy who can explain it to you. I hope you can find a matching color of tile, if you don't have the original ones. Maybe you can get some black trim and just use those pieces. Home Depot carries all sorts of trim pieces, with "bull nose" for the ends. The contrast might be a nice change.

As for re-grouting and glazing, it's tedious, but doable. You need a screw driver, dremel tool, utility knife, to get through the old grout.

Some gypsum backer boards don't require vapor barrier...you might ask about that. I really think this is doable, Dottie. It's not a large area.
    Exactly what Fen said.

we bought backer board specifically for a bathroom....it is 1/2 inch. wasn't sure how to attach...may give this a try....we are paying folks to do the reglaze....but they wouldn't do the tile and said it had to be done first so the tub wouldn't be damaged by fixing the tiles.

I regrouted the second bath... it's a pain in the arse but not exactly rocket science. If they're patching the tiles back in they'll need to regrout unfortunately.

It's hard NOT to break tile. If the other tile is bleached out or damaged, you might just as well rip the whole thing out and replace the entire walls, unless, as Zen suggests, you are selling the place as is... then, they can deal with it! If the tile is relatively okay, and only the bottom trim needs replacing, I would go with a different color trim and patch it all up. I am NO expert, though. It really couldn't hurt to bring some pic in to Lowe's or Home Depot.

I will send you a pic of one of my bathrooms, so you can see what I mean.

You will either have furring strips or studs behind the tile Dotts... and you'll screw the cement board into that. And just make sure the board has a nice cut that fits tight with the existing. You can caulk it before you grout the tiles back in.

For some reason unknown to man, God, and the powers that be... Hubbs salvaged ALL the tile he pulled off. Stranger things have happened at sea I suppose but that's a head scratcher!

Hmmm...I was just thinking, if you don't have a contrasting color at the top of the tile, it won't make sense to do that at the bottom. Do you have the original tiles?

And yes, you can for sure find videos on this.

I redid my downstairs bath, but I removed all the tiles and replaced with large sheets of backer board. If you have the original tiles, you should be golden.

That is awesome! It can be a real pain to try to match tile. Hopeless, if it's older.

She has the existing tiles. Strangely. I'd have killed them I am sure.

Looks like it's a straight "affix backer board and grout tiles back in, followed by shallow regrout over entire tile area".

Dotts... get a good measurement on the backer board and have Home Depot or Lowes cut it to size and shave it if necessary.

Gawd! Now I want to get a bloody handyman for her... Gah! You sent her a link Fen?

There is only one thing that worries me and that is the fact the tiles came off so easy and in one piece... makes me think the backing is compromised (i.e. waterlogged).
