Sent it Fenny. Dotts wants to put that plastic finish on the whole bath and shower (can't for the life of me remember the name of that) and just needs to prep the tile so it will adhere. Dampness is an issue too... when's the last time it was used Dotts? And probably best to spray for mold. Over to you Fenmeister! ;o)

Do you mean Dottie wants to place a "tub surround" over the existing tile?

                Okay, good.

Do you think the "rot" extends up into the next row of square tiles?

I figure the new folks would remodel the kitchen and bath..they are both a flashback to the 60's.

I now have all the details Fen. Dotts and Hubbs actually wanted to patch the tile and leave it as is and just recoat the tub... which I don't think will work as you can't match up to old, bleached tile. I reckon its best to see how far up the rows the tile is compromised, remove more if necessary, replace with matching (ish) tile and coat the whole shooting match... bath and tile. In my mind it's either that or all new tile as there's no way they will find a match to the existing. ???

If you're selling "as is" Dotts then go and slap Hubbs from me for removing the tiles!!!

Dh carefully removed the old tile and we have cleaned off the back so it can all be put back so no matching...we were afraid of that too....so far there are no broken tiles.

Does it smell moldy? If it looks and smells okay, I would think you'd be able to simply replace that space with new backer board. You'll need a razor knife and some vapor barrier. Screw it into the studs. Does it look like 1/2 inch backer board? If you have a Lowe's or Home Depot, you might find a guy who can explain it to you. I hope you can find a matching color of tile, if you don't have the original ones. Maybe you can get some black trim and just use those pieces. Home Depot carries all sorts of trim pieces, with "bull nose" for the ends. The contrast might be a nice change.

As for re-grouting and glazing, it's tedious, but doable. You need a screw driver, dremel tool, utility knife, to get through the old grout.

Some gypsum backer boards don't require vapor barrier...you might ask about that. I really think this is doable, Dottie. It's not a large area.

That was a trick Dottie... I'd have broken the heck out of them I bet.

All right then... is it dry and firm behind the removed tiles?
