    Sleep..?

    Hiya all,
Well it's 4.17am am and yet again, I'm in the wide awake club!!
When drinking I used to wake up at 3 am sweating, now I wake up at 2am not sweating and just cannot get back to sleep.
I get to sleep really easily about 10pm but grrr.. 2am and ding!
    Any ideas?
I have tried tryptophan, valerian, warm baths with magnesium...
    Thanks
    Patrice

    Sleep..?

    Hi Patrice,

Not being able to get back to sleep is miserable. Have you tried Benadryl? It worked for me and has worked for others here and it is not addictive. Also, I love Passion herbal tea (the kind you get at Starbuck's). Also, the MWO hypnotherapy CDs are good for insomnia, too.

    Congratulations on your AF time!:goodjob:

      Sleep..?

Hey, Pat. So glad you're having this no sleep problem instead of the old bad one! I've resorted to adult-strength nighttime cough medicine a couple times. It doesn't have AL in it but whatever the antihistamine is in it really works on me. Makes me sometimes wish I had a cough so I could justify taking it more often...

          Molly Hi!!
Yes it's one of the reasons I have relapsed so often but determined not to this time... I'm not worried about not sleeping it just annoying and exhausting.. Time yes that seems to be one of my fav words at the moment !

              Sleep..?

              Big waves, Patrice,

You're never going to believe this but I was just having a look see about sleep in early sobriety and bookmarked this the other day.

How to Deal with Sleep Problems in Early Recovery

There are things that people can do to increase their chances of getting a good sleep at night including:

              * Developing a sleeping schedule and sticking to it. This means deciding on an appropriate time to go to bed and to wake up.
              * It is not a good idea to spend hours lying awake in bed because the brain begins to associate being in bed with being awake. If people find that they are unable to sleep the best idea is to get out of the bed and do something relaxing like reading a book.
              * It is highly recommended that people avoid all caffeinated drinks from the late afternoon onwards.
              * People should avoid having a TV or any other type of entertainment in their bedroom. This is to mentally reinforce the idea that going to bed is about going to sleep.
              * It is not a good idea to eat a large meal in the couple of hours before going to bed.
              * It is best if people avoid day time napping.
              * People should try to create a relaxing environment prior to going to bed so that this puts them in the right mood for sleep. This could mean dimming the lights and listening to relaxing music.
              * Some people find that drinking hot milk or chamomile tea before going to bed helps them sleep.
              * One of the most important tools that people need to develop in early recovery is the ability to manage stress. These stress management strategies will help people sleep better at night.
              * Relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga can help people sleep better at night. Practicing one of these techniques prior to bed may help ensure a more restful night.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

                    Sleep..?

Hi, Pat. Benedryl is an antihistamine but it isn't the one in the cough medicine.

It is good not to use your iPad or other blue light-generating device right before bed, also. Or you can get orange filter glasses. I have them and they really do help.

                          Sleep..?

                          Yo Patrice,

I would add cut back on any excitable thoughts/high rate mental activity at night if you can. This helps me i've noticed. Meditation might help, or just chilling as best you can. I usually sleep well fortunately, but if i allow myself to get wound up over something, it of course can stay with me in my thoughts. Cutting out i-pad activities and replacing with a relaxing book/activity and maybe a cup of your fave AF non caffiene drink could be an idea.

Great job on your AF time.

Have a beaut sunday, and wishing you peaceful slumber tonight.
