Hello Irishlady, I love to read your posts because they always make so much sense and alot of thought has gone into them. Of course you are right in what you say. Once the realization that alcohol is a magor problem is accepted, it all becomes alot easier and alot clearer. When i first found MWO I knew I had a problem but was still teetering a little on the outskirts fooling myself that I wasn't THAT bad. As I read more stories by other MWOers, participated myself and opened up myself to all of you, I have slowly realised that... Yes, I have a BIG problem. But how wonderful to actually acknowledge this to myself. I could then do something about it! No excuses to make anymore. Being a part of MWO did this for me. So ....really I am grateful.
Thankyou Irish for being so wise as usual. Bella xxxx

              Louise.....
I think we all need to realize that we do make choices 24/7.
              Thanks,

Thanks Louise. Your posts always have a lot of wisdom. I had never given much thought to the choice/excuse process before, but my head is spinning. Wish I had something equally brilliant to offer, but I need to think about it some. Just wanted to say thanks! :thanks:

That was definitely the BEST post I have ever read Louise. I read it before leaving for work and it really got me thinking. You really put things into perspective. I know I always 'thought' I had a reason to drink, but looking back now they ALL were excuses. I am printing this one off.

I had a reason, but it's time to deal with that reason and STOP.

I have been giving this some thought and would like to present a slightly different view. I think some things qualify as excuses and some things are explanations, circumstances. That doesn't justify the behavior.

For example, if you educate a child very well, send him or her to all the best schools and reinforce all that behavior at home. The child is nourished with healthy food etc and treated well, allowed extracurricular activities. You have a reasonable expectation this child will turn out to be educated and well balanced. But what about the reverse situation? the child is abused, given a poor education, fed crappy food, subjected to domestic violence. the child may still make it and many do, but certainly the chances are slimmer, aren't they?

I was just reading that addiction is common in oppressed communities.

Sometimes I will defend people and I am told that I am just making excuses for the offender. For me, I can see that the behavior is understandable in the context of the person's life. However, the behavior is still so clearly wrong and destructive.

The buck has to stop somewhere though and we certainly do have choices... you can see i am in two minds about this.

                            Louise,

All our lives are about choices. Sometimes we act the best we can under the circumstances, sometimes we simply follow our instincts and most of the time we try to rationalise. The turmoil comes from the fact that our hart is telling us one thing and the rational mind is contradicting it. And of course then it comes pleasure which is normally associated with something completely different to what we experience day in day out. I love reading books and for many years that was my escape from reality until I discovered alcohol. I whish I never did, but that is a different discussion.

There is a wonderful book about life and choices Paulo Coelho - The Alchemist

The "food" we feed on physically, mentally, and spiritually does have an effect on us.....
Some people have a inner strength to "rise above" all the negitive stuff in their lives....

Another excuse: I've just bought a bottle of wine to cook with, i can't let it go to waste, so i'd better drink it!
