July 2014 RJ Update

I truly believe this spammer issue is going to be the end of this site and I think RJ is fine with it. I can't imagine starting something so successful, that helped so many people get sober, inspired so many friendship and lifelong relationships and welcomes so many newcomers with open arms, and then letting it swirl down the drain.

So many of us want to help keep this site going. People have asked what will it take, specifically how much do you need from us and how many of us need to contribute. If I contribute $100 today, how will that help if no one else does? If 100 of us contribute $25 each today does that do anything to keep this site going? If this site needs to switch to a subscriber only forum could it be a small amount of say $4/month so everyone could afford it? How many subscriptions would it take to make the site functional? I want to help but we are not going to blindly throw money out there without a concrete plan and ongoing moderating of this site.

This site saved my life over 3 years ago and I am willing to give back as I know others are. We cannot blindly give money though without a plan and ongoing feedback and oversight by someone/anyone who will keep the site modded.

This makes me so sad to see a place that does so much for alcoholics swirl down the sewer

Red, I hear you.

There are so many generous, tech savvy people here who have offered pro-bono assistance, and so many of us are willing to pay if the site is secured. This situation is really breaking my heart.

A similar thing happened to my spouse's websites a year ago...she had to re-write the content management system. It took a lot of money, but so many of us here are willing and able to contribute money.

I really hope that R.J. reads this and takes action, but I am losing hope. :upset:

I'm done, too, I think. Once I figure out how, I'm canceling my subscription. I don't think even a mass exodus would get any attention at this point. I hope all of us are fine when this site fails but I doubt that everyone will be.

I know Fen, I am so disheartened watching this happen when it doesn't have to. We can help and we want to but no one tells us the specifics. I wish if RJ didn?t want this site anymore she would turn it over to the members who know the techy stuff to keep it going. I want to and can definitely afford to help but I want to know how my money is being used and see active moderating.

You and I are from the same area I think, I live in Milwaukee. I read here everyday and feel I a connection to the people here. I don't want to lose that.

I just sent in a donation today ($250) and am not willing to jump ship. This is too important to too many people. I am going to start a new general thread, and try to email or otherwise contact RJ. We need to step up! Thanks.

I offered to help too...no response. Sad...I am on line every day and hate to see the spammers taking over....she does not communicate or give any status updates. Such a great site and none that I have found to be any better.
Not sure what to do at this point.

Everyone should remember that RJ posted her lengthy update, less than a month ago at this point! So, respectfully, we all should not jump to conclusions about where she is at with MWO.

And, in her opening comments, she acknowledges the tech problems. Further, she has set up a donation method that is easy to use. Now it's our turn. I presume that she is awaiting a response from the community, and that has to come in the form of money. She wouldn't have written her detailed update if she was done with MWO.

I for one have faith in RJ and believe that if we collectively step up and provide adequate funding, she will do what's needed to get the problem resolved. This isn't the first time that some random bots somewhere have attacked a web site... happens everyday in business and elsewhere; there are things that can be done to provide more sophisticated protection going forward. This is a relatively old web site by current standards, and some updating is in order (think: secure sign in passwords, for instance).

I appreciate what RJ has done and I have read her updates. The problem is we have asked specifically what will it take to keep this running - how much does it take each month to keep this running? At this point I can not see giving money without knowing what the plan is. This place is overrun with spammers and not a single thing has been done about it. I bought the book, CD's and Kudzo from this site when I joined and I am more than willing to subscribe but not at the moment when all hell is breaking loose and no action is being taken.

NoSugar has gone above and beyond to set up a specific thread to keep the problems reported in one area so it's easy for RJ or any moderator to see. I know she has also sent many PM's to RJ with no response.

At this point what are we supposed to think?

As I said, I truly appreciate, and I know most everyone here does, what RJ has done. But going forward we need a plan and active moderating. I absolutely will help pay for that - when the plan is put in place. I will not blindly throw money at something that looks like it's been abandoned.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for cleaning up the spam! I truly did not realize how much this site really means to me a daily basis until the problems starting happening. I am going to subscribe tomorrow, I need to get on my regular computer (I do most of my posting from my phone).

Thanks again RJ. We all love this site and truly do appreciate what you have created.
