Do we all feel more than most?

Sorry about the title about this thread, but I didn't know what else to call it.

My whole life I have been very affected by the misery in the world and I wondered if anyone else thinks there is a link with our drinking sometimes as a way to numb the pain that others feel as well as our own.

Today for example I was flicking through the paper and saw a photo of all these refugees from Africa who's boat had obvioulsly sank and they were all now clinging on to a huge Tuna net for dear life.

The sight upset me so much I couldn't actually read their story and I had to throw the paper in the bin so I wouldn't read it, because I was already crying.

I love those charity telethons but can't watch the little snippets about the poor kiddies and adults suffering all over the world. I rememeber one time watching a story about a little 3 year old girl in India, where they have so many street kids, and all she in the world was a blanket. I will never forget that till the day I die.

When I lived in London I used to hate seeing the homeless, especially if it was cold, when it snowed I just wanted to turn my living room into a shelter. I would comment on the plight of the homeless to my friends and it was all like water off a duck's back to them.

Sorry if this all sounds a bit depressing, I just think there is a big link in our drinking habits and the way we see the world. I'm not saying we are better people because of our drinking because I know we all make mistakes, but I do feel that maybe our brains are just rewired differently to some others.

Sorry if this has turned into a bit of a rant, I'm not sure I'm quite expressing my point efficiantly but hopefully you'll know what I mean.

Since I have been AF I have stopped watching the news or reading the paper. I know, it will make me uninformed, but I also don't have all that depressing crap running around in my head. And, if somethinig big happens I need to know about everyone will be talking about it anyway.

Kitty I do agree with you. I can't walk past anyone in the street who is begging
without giving money,my husband say's I'm a soft touch, as some of these people
are proffesionals, so now I just buy the big issue. I think maybe we are extra
sensitive, but I could not be any other way.

Sometimes we may feel more because of the drinking, you seem to understand how people get so low, and how it feels to be so low, people without problems dont really understand until they are there themselves , and then bam they suddenly see what we see, so maybe being unable to control what we are doing is what make us understand the struggle of others.

When I'm feeling low I do a news blackout because bad news is like a magnet to a depressed person and they just feed on it. Therefore justifying a drink.

I'd say many of us are empaths - in that we feel the suffering of others, like really feel on an energetic and soul level. So yes, it would make sense that we numb ourselves because that is a whole lot of misery to feel apart from our own.

I hope that when I get sober I can commit to doing good for others... it might give me some light, like I'm doing something to relieve some amount of suffering.

I have been upset all day today after reading about the panda that died in China.
Raised by humans then put into the wild. Oh, I can't handle stuff like that.
I felt responsible for that panda somehow.
I worry about everyone any everything. Apparently it is all under my control!!!!!

I drive by an underpass everyday and see the blankets used by the homeless who sleep there each night. I have to look everyday and I think about them and how they slept last night and where are they right now....

I do think there may be a corrleation with that and drinking. I think it probably stresses us out because we can't do anything about these issues - well, for the most part anyway.

Love to everyone here today. I had a hard day and could use a hug so I'll just give one instead :l :l

                      Hugs to all of you!!!

I am actually made fun of in my circle for being over-empathetic. I swear I can actually physically feels people's pain when they are sad or hurting. It makes me absolutely insane but for years I chalked it up to being a hormonal woman.

I am completely with MD on the news issue. I stopped watching news and reading anything about two years ago and I do not regret it one bit. I still catch a little bit here and there; enough to make me feel sad and sick for hours but I would be in a much worse place if I watched and read the news like I used to.
I'm really easy to get along with once people learn to worship me

                            Yes, I'm definately an empath!!!

But drinking only makes it worse.

                              Hello again Kitty and All,
I had a lengthy post written. but I couldn't quite get my meaning across.......

suffice to say, I get sniggered at by my peers for being such a wuss. But I'm glad I've reached the stage where peer-pressure means little to me.:l
