What is the origin of the term spelling bee? We cannot be certain, but the dictionary defines a bee as a ?social gathering where people combine work, competition, and amusement.? You may have heard of husking bees, spinning bees, logging bees, or quilting bees. Some believe that the term refers to the insect and that the meaning arose from the similarity between people working and socializing at these events and the industrious, social nature of bees.

I don't need to get out at all. I'm having a solo bee.

                Hey Lucky,

I don't know what it's like in the US, or anywhere else for that matter, but in Australia we are taught how to write and use punctuation at primary school. :-)

Lucky - a frog has to have some standards!

I think it was frog who used to have her auto signature as: If you do not like my morals, I have others.

Something like that. It was funny.

Try it - you'll like it

There is a documentary called Spellbound that follows 8 kids on their quest to be the national champion. Sounds boring but it is totally charming and heartening to see these kids and their families. What ends up coming across is the value some place on education, seeing this country as a land of opportunity (many are immigrants) and (just a bit of a relationship to all of us) setting goals and working hard toward them with the enthusiastic support of family and friends.

Well just ask HappyCamper, I could never be in a spelling bee.
My son was in one when he was in 8th grade.
                            He came in maybe 3rd.
The gal who won could spell amethyst.
By the way, I think being a good speller is a gift.
