    That's ok Rags.

Thanks for that link Mr G. True perspective.

Froglette it took all my efforts not to like your last post. I feel restrained and grown up. And also sad.

And hello Cindi love, so good to see you!!

Gough will be remembered for so many vital, life-changing things. A brilliant mind, razor-sharp wit.

When Winston Turnbull stood up in Parliament and declared "I am a Country member ...", Gough interjected with "I remember".

I was able to go to university because of Gough.
        I was in his electorate.
        He lived at Cabramatta.
I actually hung out with Joe Mannix's son for a bit.
That's going back a few decades.

The Whitlams were very good 'friends' of a University I previously worked for. Both Gough and Margaret were often honoured guests at functions and my job was to ensure their comfort and their place in proceedings. His was charming, witty, gracious and keen to do whatever he could to make the event a memorable one. He resisted using a wheelchair for ever and the last time I looked after him he was apologetic that he had surrendered!! He had enormous feet!!! Margaret's were bigger but....

I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when the announcement came through on the radio.
As I was a public servant, supply affected our pay, and we were about a week away from being stood down.
We were all in the finance section of DSS.
One of the guys had a trannie and when he heard, he jumped up from his desk and cried
"Oh no, oh no, they can't do that"
Then he just burst into tears.

None of us thought it would really happen.

Then there was the time when they werer in New Zealand during an earthquake at about 2 am.
When asked about it, he said " I turned to Margaret and said Did the earth move for you..."

                  SMH - bloody awesome!

In August 1975, Whitlam gave the Gurindji people at Wattie Creek in the Northern Territory title deeds to their traditional lands.

'Vincent Lingiari, I solemnly hand to you these deeds as proof, in Australian law, that these lands belong to the Gurindji people and I put into your hands this piece of the earth itself as a sign that we restore them to you and your children forever'.

Almost one of the last things he did as PM.
                    Another great milestone.

Had no idea it would lead to land rights.
