There has been a dramatic drop in temperature here...actually had a few snow flakes swirling around in the breeze, but things have stopped, now.

Holiday. Leave Australia about 6th June and return 28th July.
Going with our US friends who lived in Ak for a while.
We're meeting them in Whitehorse, will be spending 4th July in Seward,
then a couple of days in Talkeeta (wherever that is) before trundling through Denali,
        Kennacott, Valdez and finally Anchorage.
We're going to take a side trip to Barrow, where I shall dip my big toe in the Beaufort Sea.
Oh, and Chicken. We're going to Chicken. I'll probably buy a dreadful T shirt there and never wear it, but it seemed amusing at the time.

Fennel, yes, between lakes Erie and Ontario. We can get snow from either, depending on wind direction. I go out in the fields on my snowshoes regularly, it is great exercise.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

Wow...are you spending all that time in AK, or are you traveling to other environs? Good for you!

I had to look up "Chicken, AK." Maybe you and Mr. Rags can pan for gold and strike it rich. For certain you must purchase a t-shirt and mail postcards to all your peeps. :happy2:

I have been thinking about taking up snow-shoeing...our snow gets too deep for good hiking, and it seems like it would be a great work-out. I'm also into x-country skiing, but nobody will go with me, as I tend to move a little too quickly...sort of along the lines of skate-skiing, but not quite. Seems like there would be less of a chance of injury if one were snow-shoeing on one's own.

Last night, we got a light sugar-dusting of snow. I wish that this photo could convey how truly bitterly cold it is here!

Wow Fen- what happened to Autumn? I saw snow pics earlier in the week of Minn and Michigan (which is not that far from you I think), and hear windshields of like 30 below! The 1st snowfall of the season can be nice to see...by the 3rd or 4th, I am looking forward to Spring..stay warm

                    Hi, STL...
My SIL and nephew live in the Minneapolis area, about a four hour drive north from me. They received about a foot of snow, according to my nephew.

I am actually looking forward to the first "real" snow here. In years past, it became a drudge for me, as I had to remove snow from my drive and sidewalk, would then proceed to the elderly couple across the street and remove theirs...then, onward to my mom's house to clear hers! My mom didn't retire until a year and a half ago, and she needed to leave the house by six a:m, so you can imagine what a drag it was to have to get up that early!

Now that Mrs. Fen and I have moved to Uppity Heights, we don't have to worry about snow removal. I hope the new owners of my old house help the oldies across the street.

I am a bit worried about the extreme cold so soon...it's hit even earlier than last year, and that was the worst winter in my memory!

Fen - beautiful pics. I have been worried about your winter too! It seemed to never end last year and now it is starting already. I am glad that you are not having to do the snow shoveling duties anymore though. :heartbeat:

Oh, Nora...last year, right after Thanksgiving, the jig was up. I swear, I have never seen so many continuous below zero days in my life! Even the heartiest of us got "down" last winter. I love to ski and hike and the extreme temps kept me from doing so.

By tomorrow, we are predicted to receive between one and three inches of fluffy, white stuff. It is lightly snowing, at the moment. With the wind chill factor, it's twelve degrees out there.

That sure seems like winter..not quite as cold here in NC, but overnight lows in the 20s. This is Pilot Mountain with a snow dusting....about 45 minutes from my house

Thanks - Not sure if you know Andy Griffith or the The Andy Griffith Show, but its the same place they called Mt. Pilot in the show...I make my kids hike it with me every few months ..great views

The town of Pilot Mountain is best recognized as “Mt. Pilot” from The Andy Griffith show. Andy made numerous references to travel to this wonderful place the locals simply know as “Pilot”. The town of Pilot Mountain is home to Pilot Mountain State Park, which is a remnant of the ancient Sauratown Mountains. The Saura Indians who inhabited the area knew Pilot Mountain as Jomeokee, the “Pilot” or “Great Guide”. The Cherokee Indians eventually drove the Saura Indians out of the area. Pilot Mountain
