Hi Fennel, I don't get to go as often as I'd like during the school year (maybe twice a month), but during the summer, easily 3-4 times a week. I went on a trip this past weekend down Shingle Creek, which is the northernmost headwaters of the Florida Everglades. You'd never know you were just a few miles away from Disney World. Here's a spot where the creek widens out and flows through a cypress swamp - it was challenging at times to figure out where the channel was - you had to stop and look for ripples to see which direction the current flowed. Also, the air temp was bracing - it was down into the 50s (please keep the snide comments to a minimum )

In the middle of my life's journey, I found myself in a dark wood, as I had lost the straight path. It is a difficult thing to speak about, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood is. Just thinking about it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death, but in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there. --Dante, paraphrased

Alky, that spot looks so peaceful. That's what I love about being out in nature! Do you ever do any white-water paddling?

Funny you should ask. There is a part of Shingle Creek that funnels into a narrow channel, and all the downed logs and underwater obstructions that have accumulated over the years create rapids (nothing too intense) and small waterfalls. My friend DID NOT do his homework and figure out that the water level was already too low to navigate this section now that the daily summer storms have been over for a while, and we had to portage around obstructions around 3 times. So no whitewater for me this trip. Even though my kayak is pretty short and I might be able to manage some less intense rapids, it's not a dedicated whitewater kayak, so I don't want to risk it.

Some rivers here in WI are barely navigable in the summer months, but monsters during the spring melt. Even the little rapids are a bit exciting!

sky.jpg Fen - This is really a great thread ..so many peaceful and relaxing pictures (sans our earlier road kill references )...these are the things we truly live for. Here is a pic my son made me snap on my phone of the sky in my neighborhood last week when the clouds actually looked pink with the sun setting behind them (this pic makes them look more orange and doesn’t do it true justice, but it was pretty cool). Thanks all for sharing your sites…

STL - I saw your photo when I woke this morning. Last week, my son made me take this photo on my phone. Made me wonder if it was the same sunset on opposites sides of the world, hours apart. Life is strange, isn't it?

STL and Happs...those sunset photos are so similar (and gorgeous!) So funny that both your sons urged you to snap those pics, too.

I am so glad I started this thread. This world of ours is full of so much beauty if we only look.

                          Hi Fennel,
Gosh, I've only just stumbled on this fantastic thread.

Took this pic of a beaut callistomen yesterday in my back yard.

And this is about 10 minutes from my place...
See the hill on the left of the photo with a pole sticking through it?
I live about three quarters the way up there... but I have to go out
on the road to see the sea as there's so much bush around..
