Yes, I have a sneaking suspicion they completely missed the point - or that some other agenda is at work.

They really played down the effect (and method) of Selincro (nalmefene).

Just to bring you up to speed after years of struggling, and trying everything (as Jackie knows) I used something called Naltrexone to fix my alcoholism, Naltrexone has been rejigged, improved(partly to improve and partly so they could make ££££) and marketed as Selincro (namefene).

The version I used killed my cravings but it's not as simple as taking the pill, you take the pill one hour before every time you drink alcohol, and you have to drink on it for it to work. Missing doses tends to muck it all up, and you have to use it whenever you drink for ever.

I reduced my drinking massively using this, then used my own brain to work out that I wanted to quit. If you quit you don't take the drug, it is no longer required, which is where I am at.

The radio discussion made it sound a lot simpler, I felt they played the treatment down and also as if the psychological support was the biggest factor.

I had years of psychsocial support and interventions and that didn't get the problem sorted out. The pill I took did, I did have support here and elsewhere but I strongly feel the pill made a big difference, it took away the physical drive so that I could concentrate on living life, and taking a look at myself. Selincro/nalmefene/naltrexone when used as per TSM have a profound effect, quite different to Antabuse or Campral.

Problem is that drug & alcohol issues do not fall under IAPT, which is a government initiative to help people access talking therapies.

The programme didn't mention that you can access counselling and other therapies yourself via charities, organisations and by approaching a private therapist. A lot of people think you need a Dr to refer you to therapy, they don't know that you can seek out your own therapy, or other support yourself.

Those are my thoughts and opinions!

This is my experience too, and it's a shame they are not targeting/offering it to heavier drinkers.

                And the pricing of alcohol FFS..........if there's a will there's a way.

Soz that I got carried away with the meds posts. I just wanted to get it out somewhere. Meds section is having it's own crisis, and I feel like a lone, very squeaky voice in there sometimes.

Bet the gas bill's a bit high Satzie.

It's as interesting as it's frustrating UKB. Which is very. The meds threads are indeed rather car crash, which is also frustraing for all but one who post there by the look of it.
