Green Thumbs Gardening

Rags, I've started seeds for onions, leafy greens so far. The flower seeds I decided weren't what I wanted to grow. I saw a lovely annual called Plectranthus last summer that I would love to grow, AKA Mexican Mint, but it would probably be too late by the time I got the seeds. Ah, there is always next year. I have some petunia seeds that are a couple of years old. I will plant them today. It is a newer variety, self-cleaning and tons of blossoms. Maybe I will go out and also buy some snapdragon seeds, they are easy to find.My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

I asked him about the black or purple toms and he said he saw seeds on sale -for the first time, the other day at the store. I bought some at the grocery store the other night and they were better than any other store bought tomatoes that I had ever had. (Just cost too much -ouch).
Hey, it sounds as if the moneymaker tomato is awesome. Why did one site say that they were rare (or difficult to come by)?Last edited by Spiritfree; February 18, 2015, 06:43 PM.

Moneymaker toms should be fairly readily available.
Do you have Thomson & Morgan or Yates over there? They sell the seeds.
You could give Black Russians a go too. I grew them a couple of years ago.
Mix them with some yellow tomatoes (would you believe the ones I got were called brandy wine yellow)
and you have one zingy looking salad.
Anyone grow watermelon?
Watermelon and feta cheese with chopped mint. Yummo. Add tomatoes and
you have a lovely refrershing and super healthy salad that kids will eat.

Just found this thread. Thanks for starting it, Rags. It's way below zero here, but that's when I love to plan my garden the most. Something to hang on for. Glad you have found some like-minded people around you to share the harvest, and your love of gardening. And proud of you for converting a few others. Homemade butter? That is interesting. And delicious, I'm sure.
I have had some life changes in the past few years and now find myself living in an apartment with a small patio and a bit of land on either side. This is very different than what I have always been used to. My old house had a large yard, and many gardens. Anyway, it's been a challenge, but I've have started to enjoy it. I like the idea of growing food in a limited space. I hope to inspire some of my neighbors to do the same this year. So I guess I qualify as a balcony/patio gardener now. Pics will follow when the season finally arrives.
Black/purple tomatoes are delicious. I grow them every year...Purple Cherokee and Black Krim are good performers, even in pots. I'm sure there are many other varieties I haven't tried yet. But these two are superb and easy to find here in the States. I'll check out the Black Russians. Purple Beauty peppers are great too. They store really well. Last forever, stay crisp, and taste fresh.
Mick - your gardens, and view are amazing. I haven't had much luck with melons in general. I don't have a long enough growing season and it's too humid. I might give them another shot this year. I obviously can't grow them at my home due to space, but I'm lucky that I managed to get a community garden plot this year, and will actually have some land to plant.
Pauly - always nice to see you. Wish I had some advice about growing in the desert, but out of my realm of experience. Maybe a controlled environment? Greenhouse? A few pots on the windowsill? I do that in the winter here. It keeps me sane during the darkest days of winter. Or you can just support your local farmers at farmer's markets. That's always a good thing.

moss..thanks for that post...as far as the tom varieties go..def going to give the ones you mention a go this year..heres a wee idea..why dont we post up pics of the land that is available to us..then see what suggestions we can come up with?give you a for instance...if you look at thes pics..at the back of my greenhous there was as everyone does..where you keep all your rubbish and bits and pieces..decided to do something with it..and now its a cold frame for my plants to harden off etc..altogether it cost me about $15 to make so it need not be expensive..just think ..what could I do with that....all the fence work in my garden was made out of pallets I got....
just thinking about sandy desert conditions..long root plants..carrots parsnips etc..Moss ..our first house had an outside toilet..that was all the space in a tiny back yard..knocked it all down (yes we put an inside toilet in!!)but that was probably the most innovative kind of gardening I have done...hanging baskets with lettuce and flowers, putting veggies in the ground in 1s and 2s using all sorts of containers!!

Mick - that's using some creativity....turning an unused area into something useful...and doing it on the cheap. That's a good amount of space for hardening off plants. I did have to laugh about the indoor toilet comment, but I digress. You've got me thinking. I need to take a fresh look at my space and decide what I can grow, rather than focus on what I can't. Vertical is the way. Thanks for the pic of the herb garden in a pallet. That's how I need to change my thinking. There are some urban gardener/farmers out there doing amazing things. And they all preach "growing up." I just need to start thinking differently. I would love some advice on my space. As soon as the foot of snow melts, I'll post.

I took a class on growing micro greens today. They are plants that you eat as salad, picked when they just have a couple sets of leaves. I just sowed some leftover seeds to do this, using beets, chard, lettuce and radishes.

Hi all -I live in the state of Georgia (or confusion -actually both). Without a doubt, we have some of the best watermelons, peaches, and peanuts in the world. I guess I never really thought about this until now.
I read where Moss is in a situation where perhaps land to grow is not so plentiful for her right now -so, what does she do, she makes the best of it and looks for ways to grow in other ways -including plants. How awesome?
Mick -just seems like you are some type of state-of-the-art growing genius. Wow, I just like looking at your pictures of plants-garden.
Anyway, thanks for this thread and all of these informative posts.
