My memory of my first drink......what is yours?

My memory of my first drink was when I was about 4 years old....I shared a room with my mom and dad and my twin sisters....I remember them giving me a 8 ounce bottle of beer in my crib and me finishing it and throwing it out the crib for them to fill it up again.

They didn't...I don't think. But that should have been a warning not to give me anything else to drink.

My mom told me that they use to give us alcohol to help us sleep.....hmmmm...maybe that's why a lot of problem drinkers have sleeping issues without alcohol.

    Just a thought......

    My first memory of drinking?
Thinking alcohol was no big deal and doing about 10 shots of vodka. Or was it 12?
I was 17 and I have never puked like that in my entire life.

    Excessive? Yea.
That should have been a sign too.

    Thanks Blue.
Something tells me that a lot of first times for people aren't going to be too pleasant.

Can't remember my first time - with some dodgy school friends friends I think.
I can blame them but I won't - that was 40 years ago.
        - but I sure as hell remember my last time.
I documented it to ensure if I EVER think alcohol is a good idea - even the elusive 1 or 2 -I will read it and be reminded.
Did not puke or anything dramatic but the horrible lost feeling of being in the clutches of something that was controlling me.

You know.....when I first read the post about my thread not being helpful I felt sad....but the more I thought about it I got mad!

I would like to think that I am a nice person and I try not to hurt people's feelings but I'm seeing some people on here don't care about my feelings!

So now I'm just going to say exactly how I feel!!! I have a right to post any kind of thread that I want!!!! It's my thread!!! When you saw the title you already knew it wasn't for you...so why not keep it moving???? There was no reason to click on it!!! And definitely no reason to post on it!!!!

This is a general discussion forum not an abstainer forum!!!!! I'm tired of being pushed around on here!!!!!

                    That's it!!!!!

We must remember that we all have different opinions here and don't allow yourself to feel bad because everyone doesn't agree or understand what you are saying. In psychology they call what you were trying to do insight-oriented psychotherapy. This type of therapy looks at the symptoms (in this case alcohol abuse) as stemming from an underlying or partly unconscious psychological conflict that one uncovers through interpretation and insight with the therapist. In your case probably alcoholic parents (gene you inherited) for them to be so irresponsible to give you alcohol that young! So, I understand that you were just trying to see if others had memories that could relate to how drinking started (in a negative way) for them.

Regarding counseling however, I am a big advocate of CBT counseling (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) which looks at drinking as learned behavior and helps the drinker "unlearn" the behavior. This does not mean that your intentions weren't good, or honorable and certainly could be helpful for some who really would like to understand that "why" of it happening as opposed to just focusing on moving forward now and unlearning the bad drinking behavior.

Here for you. Just a p.m. away.

Was just wondering how we all got here coming from totally different paths....that's all.

Thank you for breaking it down like that!

And....yes....I was very upset when I was posting this morning....but I'm much calmer now.

Oh, btw, In response to your question, my first drinking episode was when I was (14) and with my girlfriend Mary visiting her over Christmas break. We got into her parent's liquor cabinet and I can still remember hugging the toilet bowl that night! Wasn't funny then but I laugh at the memory now. Seems like from the very beginning I didn't have a shut off valve.

I think its just blue's acronym for Abstainer as opposed to saying AF (alcohol free).
