Natural sleep aids (valerian)
I jus want to get your take on this. My sleep as been quite troubled, I barely sleep more than a few hours. I used to take a shake that had plenty of bvitamins that was great for sleep but gave me headaches. I switched to one with very little Bs which is Phenomenal for everything...cravings, mood, anxiety, energy...it has literally given me my life back...so thankful. My sleep has been pretty poor though. After through research I decided to try Valeriab root due to it being natural. To say the least, this stuff is wonderful. I am getting a solid night sleep and I've never been happier. It also leaves this really pleasant anxiety free feeling the next day. Has anyone tried this and what was your experience. I want sober recovery and feel that its nature's way to help poor sufferers like me without going the prescription route. Should a recovering alky go down this route?Last edited by lizker; September 10, 2015, 07:52 PM.Its for freedom that Christ has set us free. I personally think that it is OK if you're a recovering alky and you want to go an herbal/natural supplementation route. Tea is herbal...right? So why not? I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourself as to whether what you are doing is "right" or "wrong" with things like that. As long as you don't pick up anything (in my opinion anyways) that has a euphoric or mind-altering effect.
My pdoc who knows of my alcoholism thinks it is perfectly fine to use herbal/natural supps...same with my pharmacist and addictions counsellor.
I personally have tried Valerian (although it didn't work too well for me...and man oh man is it ever stinky!!)...and have other supps, such as Kava Root, Ashawagandha, Holy Basil (etc). Although I do not take it on a nightly basis, only if I am having difficulty getting to sleep or my anxiety is through the roof. It's better for me to take then my benzo's for example.
I also drink a lot of herbal tea's as well (like Sleepy Time)...and I use an herbal remedy on my feet before bed as well that supposedly has a detoxifying effect (but to be honest, helps me actually sleep through the entire night).
I am 110% all for natural supps.
Hope that somewhat helped.
I think you're just giving yourself a little push in the right direction to get back on track.
I would also recommend magnesium for sleep as well.
Melatonin is good...but only recommended short-term - as it can mess with your hormones (as melatonin is a hormone).
Everything you should check out with a doc/pharmacist...(I'm neither). Just my opinion and what has worked for me!
Great job on the sober days too Lizker!
Sending big hugs!

Thanks for that input Briseus. I like the sleepy time tea too. Its my second time around with valerian. First time didn't work as I was a few day in. I think my brain is significantly healing which is helping this time around. It does smell like an outhouse...lol but it's really helping me. Getting 6 hrs straight is something I haven't had in years. You doing great as well Bri, let's keep up the good work.Last edited by lizker; September 12, 2015, 07:25 AM.Its for freedom that Christ has set us free.
