    health effects after you quit

Hi. i have read testimony of people's health improving greatly after a few months off the drink.

Also been reading medical stuff about how the liver improves and can balance your glucose better, allow you to absorbe vitamins better and overall you get a better quality of sleep.

Can anyone here think of anything specific they noticed after a while off the booze?.. even if it's just better skin or a feeling refreshed etc..

    Would be most interested.

    thanks

Eyes aren't dry, stomach is settled, face less dry, bloated,no acid reflux, no bone/muscle pain,no weird vision,no shaky brain, loud noises aren't making me jump out of my skin, etc, etc,I do wish I could say I sleep better but I'm a lifelong insomniac
I have too much shit to do today and tomorrow to drink:sohappy:

I'm taking care of the "tomorrow me"
Drinkin won't help a damn thing! Will only make me sick for DAYS and that ugly, spacey dumb feeling-no thanks!

Same here - better sleep and clear eyes are two that come straight to mind. Mental clarity is also greatly improved - able to function so much better at work. Patience is also much better now. I lost 10-15 pounds in the first 8 months or so but have put back on ~5 pounds. Staying up late working is no longer as big an issue since previously if I stayed up late working it meant I drank even more (keep drinking til going to bed) and then when morning came I would be a mess. Now if I need to work late I know it won't affect me the next day. All in all, everything is better without drinking!

Even though I was working out, I have better gains after not drinking, fighting my complex reaction seems better, so in essence quick decision making has greatly improved, I used to think I was slow reacting, now I think I was just too relaxed from the night before

More energy and endurance with working out. I attribute it to better liver function. Mental focus and concentration are better. Moody is based on amount of sleep I get. I sleep better most nights but every now and then I do get those tossing and turning nights which always leads me to a funky mood. On the days I sleep well, my Moody is definitely sooo much better since quitting. My skin and hair are also so much better.

At 50 days AF: Skin....the redness and puffiness in my face has gone. I am much more toned generally. I look switched on and vital/with it, as opposed to when drinking I looked tired, red, and irritated.

I sleep better. A little tiredness can come as the body slowly heals itself.

I am more conscious of what I eat. I eat far more healthier these days.

I am liking myself more. Self confidence is strong and way up there.

Go for it Kev. Living booze free becomes more magical and amazing day by day. As long as we have a grateful mindset and don't believe we are missing out.

We are missing nothing, we are gaining.

I have read Alan Carr’s book again and I think it has sunk in this time.

Not using will power, not craving for a drink. If I think “oh I quite fancy a drink” I just reverse it immediately like he says to do. Isn’t it great my life is no longer dominated by DEVISTATION.

I went out with a jolly drunken friend at the weekend and it was interesting to see everyone hammered and how people behave when on the drink (rugby is on).

People think they are talking sense on the drink but they are actually a bunch of rambling slow thinking buffoons after a certain point. I can see how fights might start when people refuse to back down.

I am enjoying breaking the association with Alcohol and a good night and I can also see that the night is not actually that good without alcohol. i.e. people are just standing about talking nonsense and seem to think they are experts in subjects like politics or whatever it may be. Reality is that they are just swaying from side to side jibbering garbage.

A good plus side of this is I’m drinking plenty of water and not ever having a late night pizza while staggering home.

It much more about the mental health than the physical health. Not drinking enables me to see how much better my life can be without alcohol. I then take better care of myself, making me feel and look like a new person. My weight hasn't changed, I enjoy eating good food now, and don't sit in my chair drinking.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

There are many reasons to quit but something I’ve found in the back of my mind helps keep me going.

I read an article about how quitting alcohol improves your body.

                      Things like :

You become better able to absorb vitamins from your food. Much better than you could while you were drinking. Your liver works hard to remove the alcohol before it attends to it’s normal functions such as balancing your glucose levels and absorbing nutrients from food.

Overall you will be taking in less calories, especially empty calories. So unless you stuff you face with crap food your total calorie count should fall. I am by no means overweight but could benefit from losing extra pounds that could only be described as “beer belly”.

I’m told that sleep improves and you get longer restful sleep than before.

No hangovers. I’ve had hangovers where I want to die. It’s the headache’s that get me now that I am in my mid 30s. Never used to get so bad headaches but they get worse when you approach the end of the 20s. It’s enough to keep me in bed till Sunday evening.

More cash in your pocket and less of it going down the drain.

Focusing on the positives can spur you on and remind you why you never want to drink again. That combined with Alan Carr’s method EASYWAY

The beer belly swelling will disappear Kev. Booze is poison to us for every cell and body part. Especially the way we guzzle it.

Ok guys I'm a few years down the line and have just had some medical/health type tests.

They show that I'm at low bodyfat (I'm an athlete so this is my target), my bone density is very good (in my early 20s I suffered from the female athletic triad which caused me to be diagnosed with osteopeania (pre osteoporosis condition)), and I have a blood pressure reading of around 100/60.

I have in the last few months reduced stress in my life, cut out sugar and reduced caffiene and I feel better than ever. Much less energy and mood swings.

I'm awaiting liver function and cholesterol tests.

The body does recover if you let it.

I used the Sinclair Method to beat my alcoholic drinking.

Drank within safe limits for almost 2 years
