Just got back from the doctor...

    Just got back from the doctor...

    Hey all...
    So, I had gone to the doctor's last week about a lump in my.....lower area...She said it was a hernia, and so she scheduled an appointment with a specialist who I saw today. She examined it and said it was definitely a hernia and that I needed surgery. She also said that it wasn't caused from fat (like it usually is) but is instead, one of my ovaries pushing through. This is what has me really nervous. I am scheduled to get my operation in late August/early september. I will continue to try to get my drinking under control again, but I am so stressed and so scared and i know that i will most likely not be going to bed sober tonight...
    I know this pales in comparison to what some of you have gone through/are going through, but I have never had a surgery before and am terrified.

              Just got back from the doctor...

              Hey Meg.

              I had a hernia operation last December. It was an inguinal hernia.
              At no time did anyone ever say my ovary was pushing out. That would have been a tad upsetting.
              I looked it up on line - just googled "hernia", and learned all sorts of stuff.
              They are generally really quite harmless and many people just live with them. The greatest concern is when the insides start pushing through the gap in the muscle wall to such an extent they become "strangulated".
              That is rare.
              I decided to get mine repaired and went to a hospital in Toronto that specializes in hernias - The Shouldice Clinic.
              I had a blast.
              Five days all to myself to read and eat excellent food and be surrounded by men (real sexy we were) and enjoy good painkillers.
              They even had an indoor smoking room. Such luxury.
              Yes, I was a little concerned as I had never been "incised" before. Not my idea of an afternoon out.

              Try not to worry.
              I actually thought it was funny in a weird sort of way. I figure I developed it building stone steps and a rock garden. Everybody thinks I got the rocks from my head - major undertaking. I guess hernias are hereditary too - my dad and grandpa had one.
              Inform yourself as much as you can. Once you learn more, you'll feel better.
