It is true that some metabolically healthy people can eat whatever they want and be just fine. For them, giving up one thing at a time is the way to go. Eating sweets serves as a substitute, not a trigger. But not everyone is metabolically healthy, with hypoglycemia being a sign of problems. HG can be deadly so there's no way a correctly functioning brain/body is going to let that happen. Anyone who has tried to use sugar/carbs/treats, smoking, etc. as a substitute for alcohol and repeatedly failed, might consider giving this other approach a try.
Like Kuya, I wish I could have a 'do-over'. When I gave up sugar and carbs several years ago is when my ongoing trouble with drinking got totally out of control. Because red wine is low in sugar and in the short-term causes low rather than high blood sugar (the problem I was attempting to fix), I convinced myself it was ok to continue drinking. What a crock. Alcohol likely was key to my problem with blood sugar - chronic high intake causes insulin resistance, resulting in high blood sugar and insulin concentrations, all of which likely is the root cause of many of our "western" (but increasing worldwide as our diet is adopted) diseases.
