I do believe that moderate exercise i.e running/trotting on soft ground and for short periods of time plus time to run free and play far outweighs the benefits of a sedentary or boring lifestyle that so many dogs have. In their natural state of course dogs would have a different lifestyle and diet. But that is not the reality. My dogs are healthy and happy and are regularly checked by a vet and if there was any risk their health or wellbeing I would not be doing what we do. I am not a runner who either runs fast , for extended periods or on unsuitable ground. I think my dogs have a good, healthy and well balanced life and because of this do not suffer behavioural issues that you see so often with dogs that are not exercised sufficiently

Starty, my dog runs for fun too,if he accidentally gets out he runs around the block a few times, we once had an American bulldog, huge dog that my hubs got but never took him out, except for pee/poop walks, that poor dog acted so depressed just sitting on the couch, I gave him to an active younger family, I think they need that activity, same as usI have too much shit to do today and tomorrow to drink:sohappy:
I'm taking care of the "tomorrow me"
Drinkin won't help a damn thing! Will only make me sick for DAYS and that ugly, spacey dumb feeling-no thanks!

Evening.
Presents wrapped (except (Mr JC's), cheesecake made for work, red cabbage done and thanks to Mr JC, the ironing's done, I'm afraid new hips don't get you out of ironing..............National Lampoon's Christmas watched (again). Jolly good day all round.
Got to say a huge well done,Pauly, for re-homing the dog. Bet he got on famously in his new home.
Our dogs have always been rescue dogs and we've taken our lead (sorry about the pun) from them. We just know a little about they're background so its all been play by ear. We learnt together.
Now I must have something to eat.It could be worse, I could be filing.

Evening,
I know nothing about dogs, or any animals. Domestic animals were not 'normal' at one point, but here we are. Mice and hamsters run around on that little wheel yolk for the craic, dont they? mind you, they are probably bored off their heads.
I get the running thing Starts, and its not a running injury, so see that the experts say in the new year.

Hi all -
If you get a chance, please listen to this song that I wrote.
I wrote the lyrics --the original lyrics to this song after I found out that one of my three sons was in serious trouble with drugs but it applies to animals as well. I am a dog and animal lover.
My son was in an outdoor rehab for 47 days and I could not function -literally. I wrote these lyrics in the first three days of his being gone (he was only 16 years old -OMG -literally). I was a broken man, but just happened to be sober with AA and other support at the time.
It cost you no-thing to listen to unless you eventually buy it from iTunes:
Lay Down My Life – Dekorah (C) 215 Jennifer Lee, Carl....., Dekorah Records. (Yellow Hammer Studio, Nashville)
This was the most difficult time in my life that I had ever experienced, and for the first time ever, I could see NO light at the end of the tunnel. I was broken a thousand times over, especially given my past history of alcoholism. There is and never will be the experience of knowing that you are about to lose one of your children -the pain you feel can be devasting.
To day and for several years back, me and this particular son are/have been thent the most special of best friends -ever- and will do anything to help each other. Strange how life happens if you will just hang in there?Last edited by Wilson1; December 18, 2016, 11:35 PM.

Morning all, hope all are fine and dandy this dark cold Monday morning?
Wilson that is a lovely song. Must have been awful going through that with your son. It sounds like your relationship is repaired and some good has come from the trauma.
Kuya, you were implying that me running with my dog was causing untold damage and that I was forcing my dogs to do something that they do not enjoy which is not the case on either count. And no, my hip problems are not caused by running.

Morning Army.
I too know nothing about dogs - only I love them but don't think I have it in me to take care of one.
Perhaps we have bred dogs to do things with us - that's ok - once both human and dog are happy.
We've also bred cats to live with us when they feel like it

As I said I have treated a dog who ran it's pads off without the owner realising. All I meant was your dogs don't NEED the level of exercise that they have been getting and that should be a relief to you now you cannot give that to them.
You have already said your hip deformity was the cause of your joint disease. The only relevant thing I heard is that excess exercise on hard ground is supposed to be bad for knees.
EDIT: The only dogs I have treated for running related injuries were Alaskan Malamutes that were used for dogsled racing. And of course racing greyhounds.
Stop picking on Starts - she loves her dogs with a passion and would die if she thought she was harming them by bringing them for a run. FFS !!
Working dogs like sleigh dogs and greyhounds are a totally different thing. We know there are dogs mistreated by humans - we don't need an out of context lecture on it. We KNOW ....Last edited by satz123; December 19, 2016, 04:39 AM.
