I am grateful for having my dog sleep on me last night, because many nights are lonely. He knows what go to bed means which is his cage and door wide open and blankets. I am grateful he thinks of his cage as a comfortable spot. I am grateful we trained him its not discipline. He thinks of it as his space and where to stay calm. Seriously different way how train a dog. We are all caught in a mental cage as humans. The dog training was a philosophical idea about what positive training does for a dog. I have raised and bred dogs before so it was an experiment that turned out completely positive! IMHO we should be doing the same for addicts and we should be treating eachother that way. I'm grateful I am not negative and see positives and success in things. My plant is alive and kicking. I'm grateful for every experience and talk I have, especially with close family. I'm grateful I had an awesome day yesterday and connected. I'm grateful we have the internet and forums to help eachother.

Re: Express your Gratitude
I am grateful for the TED talk links you posted, empyr3al and Orimus. I managed to listen to two today. The one about shame (Brene Brown) quit on me halfway thru. I'm going to try again because I found it very interesting. I also listened to the one about looking at stress in a different way (Kelly McGonigal). Very interesting indeed!
Grateful to see you Wildflowers. Keep on coming!
Grateful for this thread and for the good company here.Last edited by dill; May 28, 2017, 06:26 PM.Dill

Re: Express your Gratitude
The last one I posted about "What we know about addiction is wrong". Johann Hari I think his name is. Will blow your mind.
I guess I will link it for those curious about what we are talking about. Hit this and see what you think."Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein

Re: Express your Gratitude
The first vid Brene Brown you mentioned, Shame and Vulnerabilty is almost an exact description of step 1 in AA. Becoming vulnerable and admitting it. All the shame."Everybody is a genius. Re: Express your Gratitude
Brene Brown is an amazing human being.
I'm grateful that the time spent with family was both enjoyable and insightful. At the ripe old age of 55, I am beginning to actually enjoy the company of my family! <3"Don't be ashamed of your story. It will inspire others".

Re: Express your Gratitude
empyr3al I watched the Johann Hari talk you mentioned but I didn't agree very much with it I'm afraid. It was interesting but too simplistic IMHO. In my personal experience addiction is a real physical phenomenon and altho there is no doubt that the addict needs to build social relationships and connections and fill their lives with more positive things both pre and post addiction, I think that is just a part of the big picture and a part of the solution. Speaking for myself, I had a full life, successful job, in tact family, lots of friends and still I became an alcoholic. I started out drinking to socialize, then to relax, but over time I began to prefer the quick solution it brought in terms of feeling good. Eventually it just began to be more important to me to have that feeling than to have the other things in my life. I began to isolate, drink alone at home, etc. I was a high functioning alcoholic for many years, but I was beginning to lose ground. I really don't want to think about some of the things that I did, all because of wine! But, my point is, there is much more to it than telling the addict you want to be there for them! If only!
I was on the verge of losing my marriage and I thought it might be worth it if it meant I could continue to drink as I pleased. I seriously thought if my hb wanted me to quit, well, maybe I was better off without him! Addiction distorts our thinking.
Anyway, I'm grateful that the veil was lifted before I suffered any serious losses or consequences and that I managed to turn myself around. It could've gone the other way. Still could if I let it.
Grateful to be sober tonight.Last edited by dill; May 29, 2017, 04:40 PM.Dill

Re: Express your Gratitude
dill Its only one part of it. I lost it all. The initial physical part only lasts a couple days to a week as we know. The self doubt haunts us indefinitely once it happens unless we are paired with other humans that are like us. Like you described about the evolution of drinking isolated drinking, I too have had this happen. I think what he is describing is more what happens in after care and after the physical withdrawl to keep us not returning to "our" solution. There is permanent damage that happens and why we describe Post Acute Withdrawl. I used many different anti alcohol drugs and for the longest time stayed sober in my life because I wanted that human connection. I lasted 6 months with these drugs alone despite losing everthing, then a lapse. My motivation was for my family which was already gone after too many attempts to try but I was in denial. Its not simply social I agree 100% but its a great addition to other ways.
The veil was lifted for me; but I still lost it all despite what these things describe. Its a conditional thing I have learned. The more you are judged the worse you feel and the guilt/remorse/shame haunt you forever.
I'm grateful and happy you haven't hit that bottom yet. Johann Hari doesn't touch on the point of hardcore physical addiction and I think it is more about adaption to socializing. Brene Brown does though in a way I would have liked to share. She does but not specifically. Wish I had learned about how to combo these anti addiction meds with these video's so I did not lose the love of my life. If I had better doctors and psychologists I would have made it though. 6 Months was a tipping point for me because of the social part, not because of the drugs or psychology which kept me sober for so long. It was facing facts I did not want to face. No matter the level of empathy or drugs i tipped for a couple days and regret it everyday.
I'm grateful you are doing well and never hit the bottom I did

Tonight I'm grateful that if the nice weather holds, we'll be done seeding this weekend.Quitting and staying quit isn't easy, its learning a whole new way of thinking. It's accepting a new way of life, and not just accepting it, embracing it...
Worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Just get through today. Tomorrow will look after itself when it becomes today, because today is all we have to think about.
