Re: Express your Gratitude
Congratulations, Sunbeam! Thirty-seven years is a big accomplishment in this day and age! I was thinking the other day about the extravagant weddings people put on these days. Weddings seem to be a big business. The costs are exorbitant! The sad irony is that the latest statistics show that 40-50% in the U.S. end in divorce! When you look at it that way, it really seems like a gamble to spend all that cash on a wedding! We've been married 40 years now. Our wedding came in under $1000, LOL! We didn't have much then and neither of us could stomach going into debt for a wedding. So, it was a simple affair, close family only and a few close friends, held outside, with buffet picnic style food, friends playing a few songs. It was a wonderful day! What was your wedding like?
Grateful for being on the inside looking out today! Snow and wind and falling temps this weekend. I won't be going far from the woodstove today!Dill

Quitting and staying quit isn't easy, its learning a whole new way of thinking. It's accepting a new way of life, and not just accepting it, embracing it...

Re: Express your Gratitude
Dill, my wedding was also small, just before Christmas. It was only family, about 20 people. I wore my mother’s gown. The group went to a restaurant afterwards, that was the biggest expense. I have no regrets at all, never wanted that big wedding. I believe that a big wedding can set the financial tone of a marriage. We have always lived beneath our means, and I still don’t feel I am missing anything. My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. Originally posted by Jude58 View PostMy husband works for the N.Y. Department of Transportation (DOT) and due to the heavy snow that we had received on Christmas, he was called in to plow, as the roads were a mess. We have no family nearby so I was alone with a half opened bottle of wine in the frig. (my husband still drinks, but not like I did I was feeling pretty sorry for myself, spending Christmas alone and all that, and I kept going to the frig and looking at that stupid bottle, which seemed to be calling out to me. "just one glass won't hurt...no one will know." I had been thinking, just one glass, it's Christmas after all. The urge was very strong, but then a memory of what someone here had posted popped into my head. "what's the point of having one glass?" I knew then that one glass would never be enough, I would have finished the bottle and started on another, then woke up the next day filled with self loathing and disappointment, things that I never want to feel again. So really, who would know if I had taken that first drink or two? The only person trying to protect my quit would know, and that would be me.
So grateful that I had the strength to say no to that talking bottle of wine.
Just read this and had to comment! GREAT JOB on playing it all the way thru! That is exactly me - why bother having one glass. It would have led to more and it would have led to the self loathing.

I’m not a huge sports fanatic but I’m grateful UCF beat Auburn today in the Peach Bowl. What a Cinderella story: two years ago they were 0-12. Today, they beat higher rated Auburn and end the season a perfect 13-0. Go Knights!Mary Lou

Re: Express your Gratitude
In spite of frigid temperatures on many recent days, I’ve managed to get outside with the dog to walk in the fields for a half hour or so most days. I’ve also been swimming in my local school pool twice this week. I’m grateful for physical exercise that makes me feel good.My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. Re: Express your Gratitude
Well done to you Sunbeam! Exercise is so important and it really helps with sleep, I think. But I haven't been able to push myself out the door for more than a dash to the car or from the car to the store! I am grateful tho to the local college. They allow community members to come use exercise equipment and their indoor track, so Mr. D and I have been able to get some exercise that way.Dill
