I'm not looking for any big YAYS! I just want to say, I’ve done it!! And if I can do it, there is hope for us all, because I was an ugly drunken broken mess. In my final months I was more a bottle of Vodka & 2 bottles of wine a day kind of girl! But now it Zero, Zilch, Nowt! I nearly died from a drunken head injury and had an AL seizure. Asking for help that day was the hardest thing I have ever done. But I clearly couldn't do it by myself. I am eternally grateful that I did ask. Who sleeps with a bottle of vodka under their pillow so hubby can't find it whilst you're passed out!
I still smoke, but hey pick your battles! I'm allowed 1 vice. I'm working on my sugar consumption, but I've still managed to lose 4 bloated stone in nearly 3 years. Just by not drinking. I still love cake!
In the early days it is madness to try to give up drinking smoking and embark on a healthy eating and exercise plan. You need to do anything and everything, to get through those early frightening days. Be it ice-cream or cake, and a bucketful of TLC and sleep. You are healing, adjusting and learning just how to be yourself again. It really is quite an amazing journey. It’s a journey you can be proud to be on. One that is shame and guilt free.
My life is super stressful, (probably about 15 on a scale of 1-10!) My marriage has nearly broken down and as we speak we are fighting furiously to keep our business open (outside forces). But at least I can remember all the fights! And don’t even get me started on my stepson who lives with us. But I know I am dealing with all of this sober and hangover free. It has taken nearly 3 years for DH to finally relax and hope I've cracked it! And by Golly I have finally got it. I'm an Alcoholic, I can't drink, I can't moderate and Al has no place in my life.
There is no romantic fantasy about that final glass of wine or the last pity party to toast it fair well. Me and it just don't mix and we can’t hang out together. Alcohol has finally left the building! Do I miss it? Hell No! The first 6 months were tough. Emotions were raw and oh how I grieved for you. But I finally saw you for what you are, just a glass of poison. So toxic it makes your body shut down to a coma state, in order to process it & rid you of the toxins. Passing out is a safety mechanism to stop us poisoning our self to death! Who knew! I wasn't just a bit tired after all, it was a blackout. And boy they were grim days.
What is the secret? It is really quite simple. No matter how good or bad my day is, Al has no part in my life. I cannot pick up that first drink as I will be straight back down the rabbit hole. A Relapse, a drunk, a divorced drunk. And very skint divorced drunk! I do have a choice, and I no longer choose Al.
I am not powerless over Al, because I have full control in not picking up a drink.
I have the power!! and soon I will have 3 years!!
