Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-May 2017

Morning,
tonyniceday Think you've got to be slightly bonkers to get through life. I've been bonkers for years (or to give its clinical name errrrrrr clinical depression). This August I'll have been on the tablets 7 years so me and the doctor have decided to do a weaning off to see how I go.

Now someone remind me I'm not 20 any more..........I should not be heaving trestle tables, great big jars of water, 3 flights of stairs about three thousand times (just as well I'm off the fags) .............my back is killing me.

My last no smoking session today.............I wonder if I get a graduation ceremony and a trophy.........a gold plated cigarette stub on a saucer.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

JC you aren't 20 anymore except in your head any that should never change.
Morning folks, ya know what, I don't care what label is put on it, I just know AL makes me sick, end of. Oh and I know I am happier now than I have been in a long time. Bit stiff from over stretching at yoga last night (did I mention I love yoga yet again?) or maybe its just muscles that didn't know they were still muscles. Anyway I am off on my trip away on Sat evening and really looking forward to getting away. I have absolutely zero, nil, zilch, nada desire to join in the drinking with my pals, it is just not going to happen, not a snowballs chance. Any wonder I feel so happy.
Ethanol is a toxic chemical, why would I drink it?

Morning Tabbers, if the time comes when I've finished a roll of wrapping paper and don't use the cardboard tube as a trumpet or a sword will be the day they carry me off to the knackers yard.

Is this the Spain trip?

Glad to hear it. Yep off to Spain for a few days. While my buddies are nursing a hangover on Sunday morning I plan on some meditation time followed by a leisurely walk to the nearest village for some real coffee. Reckon I am getting the better deal for sure.

Morning Army !
Tabbers with that attitude you have won the battle.
I too never put a name to it - it's my 'condition' and one drink will never work .... end of.
I thought about it yesterday while out in the sun and I was thirsty. There was beer in the fridge or tap water (yuk) so I mulled over what would happen.
Even after 4 years - the outcome was not pretty :egad:

The good times did not enter the story ........
The end of this particular story was , in fact, horrible - so I go up and went to buy sparkling water !!

Hya Benji, thanks I hope you are right. It feels that way to me but I will never become complacent for too many times I have decided to just have the one, sure haven't I managed to be sober for xyzy days I can control it, and within a short period I was back drinking every single day. No thanks. I have told everyone who I want to share with by now and I am settling in, happy in my new skin. Enjoying the new things I am doing for I feel it is imperative that we don't just stop and expect to stay that way without making lots of other changes, most importantly in our acceptance of the facts. Listen to yer man here ten years sober I must be with doling out all the advice....

Yep - you & I know for sure there is no such thing for us as 'one' or 'two' .....................
Yes we do have to change and become SELFISH. Others won't change.
Say no more often ............. and be happy in your decision.
I found I felt PROUD of not having to drink alcohol to enjoy myself was the key - and rubbed than in whenever I could.
Watch the faces when they get up and you've had your coffee, breakfast and started the day before mid-day :haha:

That look in my experience is usually envy !

It amazes me that if you scratch the surface people will say 'oh I don't need a drink when we are out at a party/function/whatever occasion', but suggest to them not to have even one and almost everyone 'chooses' to continue to have AL. If many stopped and thought about it they don't actually realise the true extent of their dependance on AL. It took me a long time to realise and by then I was addicted. But that is the relationship many of us Irish have with AL I think.

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-May 2017

Good morning Army!!

Ah, KTAB - how great it is to hear how content (not complacent) you are in your sobriety. I could use a lot of different phrases about how much better life is sober, etc., etc., but we all know what I mean without saying anything. And to accept the fact that we cannot have a drink is one of the main points of continuing on this new path we've chosen. And indeed it is our choice to continue. And what's the big deal about not being able to drink, anyway? Now that we finally figured it out, it's simple - I don't drink. Three words. That's it. No answering to anyone, no making excuses, nothing. Simply, - I don't drink. I let others wonder about it and bother their heads about it - I don't care. It's my life and my decision. I am a different person since I got sober. I'll be 65 in August and yesterday I worked 14 hours, went to bed and got up at 5:30 to start all over again. I delivered orders to 4 customers and was back at the store by 8:30. I could never, ever have done that in the past. Ever. I am a new person and my sobriety has given me this new lease on life. So glad to hear that you are happy, enjoying your life and looking forward to doing new things. Life has so much to offer and we can finally see that when we aren't looking through the fog. Good job. So glad to be on this journey with you and all the others here at MWO.

Wishing you all a great day!!

Satz - how's yer Greek? Are you gonna wow the locals on your next trip to our lovely land? inkele:

Stirls - I'm learning Greek Classics - architecture, drama etc. - not the language.
But I do have a new found respect for all things Greek considering we got our 'civilized' ways from them .....

Not only the Irish, KTAB. In our society today, it is a taken that we have a drink to relax, to celebrate, to ease our sorrow, whatever the excuse. Just watch movies on TV or serials and see how many of the characters pour themselves a drink when they get home from work, are in their office after a difficult meeting, after putting the kids to bed, relaxing beside the pool, getting dinner ready. It's there, everywhere. Like it's an understood thing that alcohol will make any situation better. It used to be that way with cigarettes which they have stopped but with AL, it just goes on and on. It's time someone took a good look at how much drinking is romanticized in our every-day lives and realize that we are giving a very wrong impression to the younger generation. Young kids actually come to Greece for drinking holidays- Malia on Crete is the most popular place. It makes me sick how it is exploited. Jaysus, they even advertise it on the internet. So, not just the Irish, but many, many other countries as well...
