Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-December 2017

Well done JC.
And Jude58 thank you for your advice on dealing with dementia.
In my job as receptionist in a Nursing Home I have daily interaction with the residents so I'm learning all the time.
We have courses to complete so I'm sure I will learn much more.
This will help with my mother who also has dementia and it's progressing.
She is quite happy in herself most of the time ...... frustrated at forgetting - but I'm sure we'll move on from that soon too.

Morning folks
lovely posts alright - and I do know when mum was suffering from dementia at the end - most of the time she was as happy as a child - it was the moments of clarity that were hard for her - when she realised that she had it I s'pose....

On a lighter note I remember going over to visit my elderly aunt in a care home in Lucan with my extremely elderly but sprightly and sharp as a tack uncle - there was a large gathering of patients near the front door (apparently they regularly gathered there in the hope of escape) and Conor being the absolute gent that he is - when we were buzzed in he dutifully held the door for them as they all scarpered -- took a while to gather everyone back - but one old lady went up to him as she was 'captured' and thanked him for a 'lovely morning out' ---

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-December 2017

Just realised how many have replied here and have first hand experience of dementia in their immediate family - I wonder is it that people are living longer? Seems like it's a cruel way for people to end their lives after maybe 80 or 90 years of productive functional living - rearing families etc... very sad - and just thinking there when you're talking about scrabble Jackie - my mum could still talk through an entire hand of bridge she had played years previously - but often couldn't remember my sisters name... Good morning everyone anyhows - just watching the end of the Ashes then off to work -- only working 3 days this week - saved up 2 days hols so it'll be a great one...

Good morning Molly and all to come. Great discussion, think it was always the case re dementia, I’m into genealogy and have looked at death records of great great grandparents and the number of them with dementia was frightening, I have not a chance but then again there was probably no proper medical diagnosis so could have been kidney infection or something else.

My second last day at work for the year so better get a move on.

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-December 2017

Morning lovelies,
Funny you should say that,Molls. Mr JC and I were talking about it and I raised the same question.............are we living too long. Beyond the three score years and ten. With today's and future medications will our bodies live forever but without a functioning brain ?
The care and nursing homes are big money these days as we have smaller families and families that are spread far and wide. Granny or Grandad doesn't live next door anymore.
I was lucky with my Grandma.............lived to 100 and although she got confused at times (don't we all) was normally spot on.
When my Mum had dementia she could remember all the birth weights of all her children, nieces and nephews and could rattle through a crossword in minutes.

Anyway today's the great wrapping day..........the day I go through the piles of stuff in the spare bedroom and wonder why the feck I bought half of it.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

I'm still not playing scrabble, though I'll take a pack of cards....bit of gin rummy won't go amiss.
