Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-January 2018
OK Satz, Molly, JC , Mary and who ever else wanted to hear the story of Jude vs the cart horse. This all came about after JC posted that she was not well, and felt that she had just been run over by a cart horse. I responded to her that I knew how she felt, as I had indeed once been run over by a cart horse. Well, the aforementioned people wanted to hear the story behind it, so here it is. In the past I had owned several horses, two of which were Percheron draft horses. My husband and I sent the pair off to be trained how to drive, pull a carriage, sled or whatever. When they returned home we often took them out driving, but I really wanted to train them how to be ridden. After a few wild rides, and nearly being hung in a tree, the mare Tessa settled in and became a nice riding mare. Moose, the gelding was my problem child. At 17 hands high and close to 2000 pounds, he was like a kid in a very large body. One day I was working with him (in the saddle) on my property which is fenced in. He was doing great when apparently he must have imagined seeing a cougar in a nearby tree. I hung on for dear life as he barreled across the pasture, and was doing OK until he started bucking as he ran. Maybe in my younger years I could have hung on, but I knew when I was beat, and I decided that it was time to bail out. I flung one leg over the saddle, unhooked my feet from the stirrups, and tried to push myself as far away from the crazed animal as I could. Turns out it wasn't far enough. I ended up looking at the underside of his larger than life belly, with mud, dirt and rocks churning everywhere. My last thought was "Oh shit, I'm dead!" Next thing I remember is waking up in a helicopter heading towards the hospital where I stayed for several days with a severe concussion and nine broken bones. Fun times! When I recovered, I did ride him again, but not very often. Mostly we used him for carriage driving or wagon pulling, which he enjoyed immensely. So you see JC, I really was run over by a cart horse, and thankfully he wasn't pulling a wagon behind him. That really would have hurt!

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-January 2018
OMG Jude --- that TRULY was run over by a carthorse!!! I shouldn't be light about it - but what a story to dine out on!!! (well once you'd survived the concussion and broken bones!!) Can't get over the BRAVERY of getting up on him again tho - I was on a bolting horse (NOT 17 hands tho I needn't tell you!)once in a forest and a sheer slope down one side and I was PETRIFIED -- having been reared around horses I have to admit not being on a horse for nearly 20 years after that time!Contentedly sober since 27/12/2011

Jude58...............Geez............thankyou and so pleased you survived to tell the tale. Had a look see at the kind of horse............they're stunning.
Molls...........not only can she dine out on the story so can we...........we can tell people we're pals with someone that really got run over by a cart horse.....and he was called Moose.
techie..........lovely to see you, sweetheart.
starty......all those ideas all come from the members of AA,NA and all the other Anonymouses..........or should be it Anonymice. Some of them fail miserably as has the art club.............but others blossom. It could be worse, I could be filing.

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-January 2018
After reading Jude’s story I might well be having nightmares about horses - cue bad pun re mares... An ex of mine (years after we went out) was actually kicked in the head by her horse - lost 3 months of her life. Good to say she made a near full recovery.
Great to see stirly and starty and the techmeister- and everyone else of course.
anon - maybe see if we can meet up in London ??
Right am pooped - off to leaba-

I don't blame you Molls for not getting on a horse again after that, it is terrifying experience being on a runaway horse. It's all up to God at that point! I've been riding since I was 14 years old and have been dumped many, many times. Everyone always told me that you have to get back on the horse if you fall off. Guess I was dumb enough to believe them.

JackieClaire I was going to try and post a pic or two of Moose and Tessa, but I'm not sure how to do that within a thread. Do you know how I would do that? I see that other folks post pics all of the time, but I'm a little electronically challenged.
Think I got it figured out!Last edited by Jude58; January 14, 2018, 07:13 PM.

Good morning everyone. Great to see the thread so active. Hope you are ok Satz? Work today and it’s lashing so no walk for the doggies before I go. Ah well it’s that time of year. Better get a move on.

Good grief, Rustyredlocks is awake before me. :egad:
Jenny's managed to get her own little house since the split with her fiance. I'm hoping to go down at the end of the week to help her move in. She's back in Uni and as of last night had caught up with all her work, got an application in for a position teaching chemistry and physics at a local high school, seen the uni counsellor, joined the gym, been out dancing and sounds pretty damned good.It could be worse, I could be filing.

Jackie-so glad Jennie is doing better. So sorry to hear about the break-up. :-(
Molly-hope the funeral was tolerable for you. I know how you hate funerals but I am sure your colleague's family appreciated having you there.
