Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-February 2018
Evening Molls and troops
Aye, went on the run - drove through to south of Edinburgh, to the bonnie Pentland Hills and joined near 600 other mad folks who take it upon themselves to run over 5 of the peaks. Back home, pooped, but glad I did it. I don't hang around at these things after. I never got into the club i run with - though like wearing their t-shirt when running - so can feel a bit of a gooseberry... as much as i do enjoy running, it's interesting how, recently joining the singing/am-dram group that it is that that I feel more 'tuned into'. Shouldn't; be surprised - my first degree was in theatre, and I was never sporty as a kid (still not, just run!) (slowly).
Yeah, JC, I have occasionally looked back on my 'journals' and they can be a bit "woe is me"... though some nice nuggets of wordage too I like to think.
Off to veg infront of the netflix box

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-February 2018
tonyniceday a question.
Young Satz says he's getting huge withdrawal symptoms and thus the vicious circle of having another drink to feel normal.
He has taken to just going out for about 2 hours to get the cure.
I told him to go to doc and get something to take that isn't alcohol to come down from 'the jitters'. He did yesterday and got Librium - do they stop the shaking & anxiety to allow the cycle to be stopped? He's saying not - FFS !
Anyone any experience of Librium or how to stop withdrawals ?Last edited by satz123; February 10, 2018, 02:28 PM.

Yes - Librium will aid with withdrawals - was given them once years ago when my doc didn't know me and thought maybe I needed them - it was grand - nice and dozy -off to sleep and gung-ho the next day.. however - what are his huge withdrawal symptoms? The risk is fitting and in that case he would need medical care... supervised.. if it's just the normal extreme hang-over type symptoms - shaky and anxious etc.. he's probably grand with plenty of fluids - I am absolutely NOT a fan of the 'cure' or the weaning off or - can't even remember what the reducing down thing is called - to me it's an absolute nonsense giving an addict a dose (albeit a small one) of the substance they are addicted to help in any way - but then - that's just me - utterly intolerant - so for me - if he's very severe he should get himself to A&E - it's free and will not leave him in danger - but 4 or 5 hours sitting waiting in an A&E dept might concentrate the mind somewhat more than a comfy couple of hours down the pub -Contentedly sober since 27/12/2011

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-February 2018
Even so called 'normal' drinkers suffer from jitters - shaking and anxiety - it's probably the bodies protection telling us 'this isn't such a great idea' when we think that 2nd bottle of wine would be good - but as we all know - an addict can never stop having that 2nd bottle of wine if we 'want' it.. so if it is just really nasty hangover symptoms - yeah - he should HAVE to put up with them - as he's been drinking alcoholically for some time he probably knows himself how severe his withdrawal is.. I always knew I was safe.. and think I would have known if it was 'worse' than normally bad. if you know what I mean - but yeah - that's my tough love bit for the day.. couldn't hurt getting him to go to A&E....Contentedly sober since 27/12/2011

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms | Drinkaware
There's a mountain of other stuff but this one seems the easiest to read
They do stop the jitters............depending on how much and the scheduling of the pills. No way should he be drinking on them. His doctor should have spent a fair amount of time explaining the whens and where's and how much. I believe librium's a shorter detox ...........3-4 days whereas diazapam is a week to 10 days. Alcohol withdrawal can and does kill.
I've done far too many medical detoxes to mention using diazpam (valium)..........the first two days were always hideous...........the last one nigh on killed me...........but it was either two days feeling near death or the alternative which was death. It could be worse, I could be filing.

Re: Join the Army Against Alcohol-February 2018
Tapering -- that's it! ah look - maybe others could do it... I definitely couldn't - one drink for me and all bets are off. Many times I could happily (well relatively happily) stop after one.. a glass of wine with workmates after work that didn't escalate or a lunchtime one... but just as easily it was the gateway to a nice old session... just not normal response - or predictable - so I don't see how it could work for someone who actually WANTS to quit...
and in fact - I'm only thinking this now - if I'd actually known of 'tapering' back years ago I'd have been it's greatest fan, cos mostly I had a great capacity for the grog and rarely appeared drunk - but the smell on my breath would have given me away no matter how often I washed my teeth -- I could have just told Joe I was tapering..... for about 10 years!!! Just 'cos I remembered he was on on Librium.
The problem is I KNOW the cure - I've done it many times.
Hangover so bad only another drink will fix it .....

Good call on the race today, bet you feel much better for it.
Sounds like young Satz is talking about quitting again? Or wants to satz123?
