158 freakin days! If/when i get to 180 days/6 months, it will be a real psychological breakthrough for me. I suspect there will be no turning back from that point. No thoughts of turning back now either.

Good job on 4 weeks Choices and RC!

My psychological break through was 30 days.. could not get passed that before I joined MWO. Love seeing Choices there now..

RC is getting up there too, over the hump, it’s shaping up to be a good year. :sohappy:

Those of you just starting out - stay strong. I can still remember my final Day 1 like it was yesterday.
I had a few stops & starts but I knew eventually I preferred the feeling of being sober than the feeling of being hungover , sad, sick and different.
'Different' was a big thing for me . I used to look at others ( normies) and envy them and wonder why I was the one who had to go home and have more. I am still in awe of that I think.
So being a person who loves myself ( I don't mean in a pukey way - I mean I buy what I like and want and I'm good to myself - no hardship for me ) - I chose the sober option.

I’m finding joy in every day as I go through this sixth year of alcohol freedom. I love selecting from among all the choices in front of me.

Congrats RC and Choices on reaching that magical first month.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

Quitting and staying quit isn't easy, its learning a whole new way of thinking. It's accepting a new way of life, and not just accepting it, embracing it...
Worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. Just get through today. Tomorrow will look after itself when it becomes today, because today is all we have to think about.

We have 'Dry January' here. Where you have an idea drinking is a problem and you stop for the month of January.
Mr S did it.
I've just read that any alcoholic worth his name can do 31 days knowing there is a drink at the end of it.

Personally I did not give up via AA but their mantra of One Day at a time is a brilliant concept. It speaks to the deepest dread of the addict that you have to stop and never drink again. It's terrifying. So the fellowships in their wisdom put out the idea that you are not giving drink up forever - just for today.......
I have never said NEVER and this ironically helps me resign myself to the fact that I won't drink today.

Even I'm confused reading that back :haha:

Dr Satzuma, you is wisdom personified. Yep... interesting article I posted on the dry january thread about a journalist who always gave up on 1st jan for 120 days - until his birthday, and then hit the bottle and anything else going it seemed until dec 31st. Eventually one year it got to his birthday and he just said "no" to a drink. Never drunk since.

[EDIT - never did post that article - so here it is: How I let drinking take over my life | News | The Guardian ]

ODAAT works for me. If i think about instances happening ahead of me they can off-set what is happening today (not a lot, but i'm not having a drink). I think back to 2013 and remember thinking a lot about my brother's wedding the following year and having/not having a drink at that. Needless to say I started drinking again (very moderately I have to say) a good 6 months before then. Still, I think it was one of a number of things that added to that final "oh fuck it" and led me to have a drink.
