Re: Join up! Army against the grog!!! March 2018

Evening all
Just in from work - and cheered up no end.

I'd love the job if there wasn't so many feckin' germs floating around & usually landing on me.

New admission of a 59 year old lady. Has to walk with an aid. Can't be left alone at home.
What was she admitted for ? Cognitive impairment due to excessive alcohol consumption.

Jesus she could live 30 years :egad:
There but for the grace of God go a few of us !!

Evening all. God that’s scary Satz and there but the grace of God go many of us. Just back from my crocheting weekend and what a laugh. Wonderful people, weather and omg the food, stuffed to the gills I am. Did 3 walks yesterday and boy were they needed! There was a bar but didn’t go near it. Just a wonderful weekend.

Enjoy Westport Mary, wonderful place. I have a cousin who had the hole in heart operation 60 odd years ago JC and not a bother on her.

Need to have a read back. Wave to all those I did not mention.

rustop59...........sounds like you had a wonderful time. on pub avoidance.

Seems like our little jaunt to the Yorkshire Dales is taking forever to get here. Have to be honest and having a peep at one or two for later in the year.

Molls, hope you're okay out there, darling.......one of these always seems inadequate but have one anyway

Nope JAcks. No fancy names. I saw the notes - Excess Alcohol consumption. Pure & simple.
I've seen Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome described in other cases but not this one.

I wonder how many are in care homes because of alcohol..........I was going to say perhaps some more serious warnings about it but when you're young....you think warnings don't apply to you

Big waves to all.

:checkin: Morning

The more I see Jacks - I'm beginning to think an awful lot of ailments of the elderly are down to it.
One of the nurses is from India and she said she is appalled at how accepting we are in this country of diseases associated with alcohol.

Just found this : There is evidence that severely ill alcoholics may be placed in nursing homes because it is the only available form of care. It is estimated that up to 49% of patients in nursing homes have an alcohol problem.

How incredibly sad is that? I've banged on to my GP for years about asking her older patients how much they really drink. I read somewhere its the 50-70 year olds who are now the biggest problem drinkers.

Evening folks --- TERRIFYING statistics there about the older generation (well sort of MY generation I s'pose -- still think I'm a young'un) -- crikey - if ever we wonder why we bother..... well - if for no other reason - to not be that statistic...

BUT --- think of it this way - I'm 61 - my generation were truly the first 'free' generation - we were the hippies, the 'out in the world' generation - music, art, cinema, theatre - all dragged us (well in Ireland anyway) out of the dim and dreary 50's and early 60's and we became teens in the 70's - where my older sisters wouldn't have dreamt of going into a pub without a man and would be even reluctant to drink alcohol in public - we just let rip -- and now - now we are 50 - 60 -70 - we may have had many years in the middle rearing kids and/or making careers - mostly both - so the wildness abated - but - it was normal.... - I would say easily 49% of my friends/colleagues/family of similar age had issues with drink... yeah

worryingly - move it along -- I didn't drink shots before going to the nightclub in my teens - I didn't drink to unconsciousness regularly as youngsters do now -- if the same pattern persists that may be seen in our generation in the next - I think we could be looking at a higher percentage in the next lot

just musing

I reckon you're more than right,Molls,.......over here we were/are the first post-war generation.......or the 'Never had it do good generation' according to Harold Macmillan back in 1957.

I was just talking the other night about nightclubs with Mr JC the other night..........they were the big night out of the year,........a special occasion not every night of the week. Getting a cab home was a treat..........couldn't get a cab then you got the bus or walked home. Alcoholics had to work a damned sight harder to get their booze in while the off licenses were open. Only posh people drank at home.

Yes -- you're right - and again - just musing - I DID drink a lot as a teen and a young adult - but absolutely nothing like youngsters do nowadays - maybe my saving grace was getting married very young and having children very young..... AND - being poor -- there wasn't the equivalent of a bottle of vodka for 15 euros back then - we couldn't have afforded to be heavy drinkers - NOW -- does that tell us that drink is now too cheap? I think it does... in the DEPTHS of my drinking - at my very worst - I was conscious how much I was spending - and we did have a few bob back then - but I was probably spending maybe 20 euros a day for a period of -- I dunno --on and off - with sober periods but maybe a year - 2 years - and cost was right up there as one of the reasons I felt the situation couldn't continue - now - if drink had been the equivalent prices that they were when I was in my 20's -- I don't think my drinking could have gone where it did -- I really truly don't.... mmm
